A Metal for Every Occasion

by Tamara Jacobs

It is no secret which metals and precious stones are the most expensive. Platinum trumps white gold, gold trumps silver, diamonds trump rubies etc. But there are some occasions that call for something more understated- like that time when you were a kid and your best friend bought you a silver friendship necklace. Or when your first boyfriend gave you the plastic ring he got out of a crackjack box. Those items might have meant so much that you still have them sitting in your jewellery box today. So which metals are suited to which occasion….

White gold:

White gold is a mix of gold with at least one white metal, like nickel or palladium. It's a beautiful option for people who don't like to wear yellow gold, and also happens to go really well with yellow gold. Many men opt for white gold engagement rings if platinum is out of their price range. White gold jewellery is a suitable option for a meaningful gift for someone you really care about. Maybe a special birthday, graduation or anniversary for instance.

Diamonds:

Diamonds are minerals and one of the most sought after items in the world. Depending on their size and colour they can be extremely expensive and are therefore appropriate for very special occasions such as an engagement. While many young women and men might sport a diamond in their ear, they are usually more suited to a more mature woman. The reason for this is their value.

Silver:

Silver is a relatively inexpensive metal that is popular for men and women of all age groups. The nice thing about silver is that because it is inexpensive it can be worn more casually. It also comes in so many different styles, like hammered silver, rusty silver, or Santa Fe silver. Silver jewellery is the perfect thing to buy for friends and family members as a souvenir from a trip, a birthday gift, or a small token of your friendship.

Platinum:

Platinum is one of the Earth's rarest elements, which is why it is so expensive. Platinum should be reserved for very special occasions such as wedding engagements or anniversaries. Wearing a platinum piece of jewellery is a real sign of prestige as it is a metal commonly associated with exclusivity and wealth.

No matter which metal you choose, the gesture of giving someone you care about a piece of jewellery is very special and never fails to please.
