Massage insurance key for MTs

by Massage

When it comes to working with the public, there are certain professions that interact with customers at a greater distance than others. For example, people who work in the field of finance do see customers face to face on occasion, but for the most part, they are working with their accounts and other monetary holdings. Those who work in fields such as graphic design may have even more distance between themselves and their clients, conducting the majority of their work remotely from a home or office computer, then sending it to the client for approval.

As for the field of massage therapy and bodywork, it is among those professions with the least distance between the client and the provider of the service. Massage therapists and bodyworkers rank right up there with doctors, nurses, physical therapists and other such professionals who maintain very little physical distance between themselves and their clients.

The reason it is important to consider how closely one works with his or her clients is because the more contact one has with members of the public when providing his or her service often means the greater the chances of needing a strong liability insurance policy, simply because the odds of a claim seem to increase with such intimate work.

As a massage therapist or bodyworker, in most cases, the clients come to you, at your practice and in your session room. The average massage therapist sees at least a handful of clients each day. Here, massage insurance is necessary in case there ever is a slip, trip or fall on your property that results in injury or damage to a client. If the client chooses to sue you for the accident, whether it is due to a loose rug in the hallway or ice in the parking lot, you will need the general liability portion of your massage insurance in order to protect you throughout any legal proceedings.

In addition, massage therapists and body workers are applying hands on techniques to their clients, in an effort to release pain or stress, induce calm and relaxation, and create an overall sense of health and wellness. The intentions here are all good ones, and the results almost always match up. However, because massage therapists and body workers are using hands on techniques to manipulate the soft tissue of clients, there stands a chance that a client may make a claim of damage or injury due to lack of skill or competence on the part of the client. In such cases, you will need the malpractice portion of your massage therapy liability insurance to kick in and provide protection against such claims.

Certainly, it is hard to imagine either of the above scenarios ever happening to a massage therapist or bodyworker, but massage therapy liability insurance exists for those rare, but entirely possible, unexpected occurrences. Much like automobile insurance, it is there “just in case,” to give you the peace of mind that comes with knowing that if an accident does happen or a client does make a legal claim against you, it will not wipe you out financially and professionally.
