Windsor CT: Connecticut's Best Cities For Your Home And Family

by Steven Penny

First settled in 1633, Windsor is Connecticut's oldest community lying on the northern border of today's capital and largest metropolitan area, Hartford. Windsor succeeded as an early agricultural community, developed a thriving tobacco industry and contributed greatly to the development and prosperity of the early historic New England community.

The combination of its high community standards in preserving the colonial appeal of the town, its strong municipal services and central location in the heart of the state makes Windsor one of Connecticut's best cities for your home and family.

Historic homes going back to the colonial and federal periods are carefully restored and preserved. The former home of Oliver Ellsworth, a member of the Continental Congress, envoy to France after the American Revolution, framer of the United States Constitution and Third Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court is open for tours from mid-May to mid-October. Grace Episcopal Church on the green was established in 1842 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Ensuring that new construction standards uphold the overall character of town, strict zoning and planning regulations have been put in place. The town has a mixture of attractive single-family homes, garden apartments and spacious condominiums.

Windsor's public school system emphasizes traditional coursework as well as the importance of individualized learning. Continuing education is available for adults in the evening.

There's a number of lovely parks, athletic fields, tennis courts, playgrounds, and a public gymnasium which provides activities for residents of all ages. Windsor's Northwest Park is 473-acres of multi-recreational facility featuring an impressive nature center. There are twelve miles of trails and an operational maple sugar house.

Windsor was the center of the shade tobacco industry and the Luddy-Taylor Connecticut Valley Tobacco Museum has regularly scheduled programs, live animal exhibits and demonstrations, a museum gift shop and more.

For Golfers, the Tradition Golf Club is an 18-hole semi-private golf club owned and operated by Traditional Golf Properties. The club includes a practice green, clubhouse facilities, a full-service pro shop, dining and banquet rooms.

For those who enjoy canoe and kayaking on the Farmington River, Strawberry Hills Park is a popular summer destination. Windsor's community center promotes a wide variety of programs and events. Every autumn the Northwest Park Country Fair takes place.

With seven exits in Windsor, Interstate 91 provides easy access to and from the city making it easy for residents to commute to nearby metropolitan centers like Hartford.

The combination of high community standards taking special care to preserve their historic buildings, the strong emphasis on current city planning, and its location at the heart of the state makes Windsor one of Connecticut's best cities for your home and family.
