Laser Coding -Write the Code Secretly

We all must have shopped in the super market or in a mall. Have you ever tried to shop lift a product and got caught later on? If yes, then you must have wondered how they found out. If you may have noticed there is always a sign or a barcode or data matrix codes on the packet which is being read by a scanner before it is sold to you. All those codes are the unique identification of that particular product and are marked as sold before you take it to home.

The unique identification is a mark of the product’s originality which is engraved in the packet of the product using the Laser Coding techniques. A number of equipments have been designed to provide the coding facility and as the technology is advancing the equipments being designed are more reliable, accurate, easy to be learned to operate and far less expensive than earlier. Not only bar coding, it also used to engrave inscriptions, texturing and etching.

Earlier marking a material was a tough job to do. It included creating a light source, focusing the energy and them hammering the material hard enough to create a mark on it. This method was time consuming, tiresome and was inaccurate. But now a days, nearly all the materials like plastics, glass and many ceramics can be marked using this technology. It has been greatly appreciated in the field of marking personalized item such as jewelry.

There are different types of laser coders available for engraving on different materials such as Co2 laser systems are used to mark or etch logos, decorative items, permanent serial number etc on glass or quartz material. Laser marking is affordable, flexible, programmable and also environment friendly.

Laser Coding systems have been proved remarkably essential for a company to track and uniquely identify a product during its manufacturing stage, at the time of sales distribution and for the purpose of warranty verification after its purchase. As it is been possible to print a machine readable code to the printed circuit board of each product which provides all the information about it without affecting its performance. The development of the PCB consists of several steps:

• Positioning the marking area of the panel beneath the laser beam surface.

• Then first circuit in the array is to be marked.

• Next position in the array circuit is marked. Repeat steps 2 and 3.

• Panel marked is displaced.

It is a thermal process in which a focused high intensity beam of laser light is used to make an impact on the material. Because of the laser beam the surface temperature increases which results in either change in color or displacing the material from its actual place and providing engraved surface through vaporization. Image manipulation is provided by the beam steered laser maker. In this process two beam steering mirrors are mounted on high speed controlled by computer galvanometers which directs the laser beam to the material. The galvanometer provides the axis to the beam, the lens focuses the light to attain highest density possible mark lines or images onto the surface. This process is accurate and less time taking.
