Running Tips - Choosing The Correct Running Bra

by Judy Mick

Making sure that you are wearing the right sports bra can help determine whether or not you are comfortable on your run - especially your longer runs. If you choose the wrong sports bra, you can experience chafing, pinching, and even back pain. Here are some tips for making sure you get the right running bra for you.

First of all, you should do your sports bra shopping in person. Take the time to try on different styles and sizes to make sure that you find the perfect fit. You should go to a running store - they will have sports bras that are made for runners, plus they can help you determine the right size.

Your running bra should be made with a moisture wicking fabric such as Cool-Max. These will wick the moisture away from your body as you sweat and prevent chafing - as well as be more comfortable. Be sure to stay away from cotton. Once cotton gets wet - it will stay wet and you will be pretty miserable during your run.

The straps should be snug when you move around (you don't want them slipping as you run), but you don't want them digging into your shoulders. You should be able to slide a finger under the strap. Pick one with adjustable straps so that you can adjust them for a good fit. If you have a larger chest (D Cup or larger), you should choose a sports bra with a wider strap for comfort.

Once you have the bra on, do some jumping around in it or running in place. You can tell if it is going to be supportive - you don't want your breasts moving around too much as you move. You will also be able to tell if the bras will stay in place as you run. A sports bra that doesn't stay in place can be annoying - as well as non-supportive to you.

When you find your perfect sports bra, make sure that you are caring for it properly. Look at the care instructions. Most running bras need to be washed in the gentle cycle. Also, avoid using fabric softeners. Fabric softeners can interfere with the moisture-wicking properties. Make sure that you air dry your bra. This also helps prolong the life of your bra.

After you have worn your bra for awhile, you may feel that it has lost its elasticity. At this point, it's time to replace it. You don't want to wear it (especially on long runs) if it is not offering proper support.
