This is Hyderabad for you

by Localsecrets

There is much more to the city of Hyderabad other than the gigantic Charminar, the rocky terrains and its hospitable people. This quintessential city of pearls has its own rich culture, tradition and unique Nawabi cuisine.

It’s the capital city of Andhra Pradesh which lies 541 meters (1776 ft.) above sea level and covers an area of 625 km² (244 mile²). With around 7 million populations consisting of Hindus, Muslims, Christians, Sikhs, Jains and others, the city lives in harmony.

They celebrate all major festivals. One can see jubilant Muslims dancing during Ganesh Utsav and Hindus attending Dargahs on special occasions. People here speak Hindi, Urdu, Telugu and English. But most people from old city love speaking Dakhani which is a blend of Hindi, Urdu, Telugu, Arabic and Turkish. The city continues to follow its age old culture and tradition in every sense while keeping pace with the modern times. One can see ultra-modern lasses in uptown localities in trendy apparels and saree-clad traditional women and girls in the center city. Food is something that a true blue Hyderabadiwould never stop discussing. They take pride in treating their loved ones and their guests with lip-smacking biryanis, naans, rotis and an irresistible array of desserts.

Restaurants are innumerable and offer a diversity of cuisines from around the world. Tipping is not encouraged as most hotels and restaurants in Hyderabad already levy a service charge on customers' bills. Tipping is not a way of life in Hyderabad and the practice is not encouraged.

Though the people here are sweet, the temperatures are not. Summers are scorching hot with mercury levels soaring up to a maximum of 43 degrees. But there is one good thing about summer that is mangoes. Once the summer gone, the rainy and winter seasons with minimum temperatures are a delight to enjoy the Pearl City. Hyderabad has a well-founded reputation as one of the safest cities in the world. One can roam and shop in the city from morning 6 to midnight. However, foreign nationals have to carry their passports all the times. According to law, they have to show passport to the hotel clerk and fill out a form with passport and visa information whenever they check into a hotel. The police here can ask for passport. They have the right to ask you for it at any time, for no reason.

Casual dress is acceptable for most situations and occasions but some establishments may require a more formal dress code. It is always advisable to check beforehand on dress regulations, if any. In you are well dressed, you will usually be treated better in Hyderabad, especially when you are doing official business. When going to religious places you should dress very conservatively. There are beggars, and then there are sadhus or saintly persons who accept donations. Hyderabad is the center of telecommunications in India. Even rag pickers and beggars use mobile phones in Hyderabad!
