Politics: How Absolute Power Can Be Used To Foster Noble Acts
A surgeon's scalpel in the hands of a vicious mugger will more than likely end up being used for something entirely different than its intended purpose. Without exaggeration, the same can be claimed about power. Like a scalpel, it is an agent. Its worth, whether it be negative or positive, depends on the way it is used.
The words power and politics oftentimes have intense connotations for a lot people. We each have an experience with power and politics, and the ways in which it has added positively and negatively to our lives. Many of those experiences have been positive ones and have contributed significantly to improving living conditions. In fact, some of the beliefs upon which our country was founded suggested great advancement in the way people dealt with one another. The concept of personal liberties is a tenet that had very little historical backing yet through the efforts of influential and powerful people many countries now are flourishing as a result of personal liberty.
Nonetheless, history mentions both good and bad leaders; those who inspired positive change and those who didn't. Abuse of power by immoral leaders has served to demoralize entire nations thus preventing whole populations and their children's children from contributing to and participating in the most essential joys of life. It takes great effort to build a population of ethical people, and even one negative experience can impact a life, long term. As civilized as we like to believe we are, you can find leaders subjugating people in many places in the world.
Societies that are moral and decent mirror the values of their leaders. How does this idea relate to politics, and how our leaders guide a country? Leaders are no different than anyone else in that they often have to be given the tools and shown how to use them to produce the kind of ethical decisions that will ensure that power is used in the most positive ways possible. It's not very difficult to imagine an entire world run by enlightened men and women who understand the importance of humane leadership.
Having noble leaders isn't really as distant an idea as it might seem. And it appears that some people understand the importance of working in this way.
