Back Yard Vegetable Gardens Can Be Very Beneficial

by Kathy Jenkins

Is your backyard a waste of space right now? Is there a piece of land that has been just sitting there being wasted? Did you ever think you could grow your own vegetables? Over the next little bit, you'll see why vegetable gardens can be a great investment.

Those who take the time to grow vegetable gardens, often feel that their vegetables taste better than store-bought vegetables. Chances are this claim is true and it doesn't matter what the vegetables were used for. Maybe the home-grown vegetables have been given more love and care, or maybe they were just picked at the right time. If the fresh vegetables are enjoyed by friends and family the reason doesn't really matter at all. As long as you have been doing your garden the organic, natural way, then you know that what is put on your table is free of preservatives and harmful chemicals.

A lot of the farmers and corporations nowadays use pesticides on their vegetables for several reasons. The vegetables are grown far away and transported, unless you buy from an organic farm or local market. To keep them from going rotten on the trip, they are picked too early, and they need preservatives. When they are covered with preservatives and pesticides, the nutrition that they deliver are often stripped away. Recently, it has been found out that if you are exposed to pesticides for a prolonged amount of time, you can be at risk for developmental or reproductive effects. It now turns out that eating vegetables as a child might be bad for their health. Getting rid of substances or metabolizing them within their body might not be possible when developing.

Growing a vegetable garden is a great way to get exercise, instead of going to the gym. Spending a little bit of time everyday working on your garden will give you welcome weight loss. Every part of your body gets a different workout when you are gardening. It will give your legs a good work out, and also your arms, buttocks, back and other places. Your flexibility will be improved, every time that you have to stretch to reach a weed or plant a seedling. By the time you begin to see vegetables and crops sprout, your body will be more fit and healthier.

The more people buy, the more the corporations make. If enough people quit buying products with preservatives or chemicals, the farmers would have to do things differently. Not everyone has enough room for a backyard garden, but commercial farming would lessen if more people chose to grow their own food.
