What To Avoid In Advertising

by Lynne Saarte

As humans, we often make mistakes. It’s like a confirmation of our vulnerability and what makes us human after all.

The thing is, when we make mistakes, we don’t just let it slip. What we do is to make amends and find a remedy to fix whatever error we’ve done.

It’s the same in advertising. Whatever your marketing campaign, be it flyers or posters, or even in your business card printing efforts, it is very common to make mistakes. It may be as simple as a typo slip or a misspelled name or misplaced address. With simple mistakes, often a simple fix is the thing that will work best.

But what about more complicated errors? How can you avoid them? Or better yet, how can you mend a blunder in advertising?

Here are a few of the common mistakes made by most business owners and marketers, and what you can do to put it right:

1 – Marketing is more hindrance than help.

If you think that advertising is something that you must do to boost your business, then it is more of a hindrance than assistance.

“We need to market our business.” It’s like the only thing your marketing campaign can do for you is to promote your products and services. On the contrary, advertising is more than mere promotions. And it’s hardly a quick fix either. More than anything else, advertising is your ticket to getting a sale. Or worse, that thing that can get in the way of your success. This means that your marketing strategy can make or break your business.

That’s why you need to widen your classification of marketing. Instead of it being something you should do, think of marketing as the thing that can help you boost your sales. Hence, you need to consider all the factors when doing your ad – your offer, your location, your name, your brand, pricing, policies, personality, etc.

The fix: list the pros and cons of the factors that can help you boost your business. What can help you attract your target clients? What can you do to fix or remove complications in your campaign?

2 – Convince rather connect.

I know that having a business is something to be proud of. It’s no wonder therefore that a lot of business owners can’t wait to brag about it. And our marketing materials are concrete proof of our self- importance. In fact, our promotional collaterals such as our brochures and custom business cards are all about us and what we can do.

On the other hand, your target clients are only interested in one thing only: themselves. They don’t care about you that’s why they don’t respond positively to your marketing tools.

The fix: connect first with your prospects before you convince them of your worth. Give them the benefits and offer them what they want. You’ll have a better chance of influencing them when you do.

Looking out for mistakes and trying to remedy them can do you a world of good in creating an effective and convincing ad for your business. Don’t let them hinder your success. Rather, make them as stepping stones to achieve your goals.
