Italy: Ischia island

Ischia is the largest of islands of the gulf of Naples, has an extension of 47 Kmq. Is a volcanic island dominated by the Monte Epomeo.Six are the towns of island: Ischia, Casamicciola Terme, Lacco Ameno, Forio, Serrara Fontana and Barano. The island’s perimeter is of 39 Km, its coasts presents varied morphology, with indentention, promontories and small sized beaches some of witch reacheable only by the sea way.Ischia is distant from Naples approximately 33 kilometers and is connected to the mainland by many ferries lines. Ischia is one of the most famous seaside and touristic spa centres of Italy and world for many reason: its climate moderated, its natural beauties, its revives hydro-thermal and the numerous hotel facilities.Ischia town is situated on the oriental side of the island. The territory is split into two main areas: Ischia Ponte and Ischia Porto. Ischia Ponte is a picturesque ancient fisher's village. Today the main activity has become the tourism thanks also to the thermal waters that gush out here. To be visited is the Assunta’s church in baroque style and the Aragonese Castle.Lacco Ameno is smallest town of Ischia island. The landscape is famous for “mushroom”, it is a large rock famous for a its shape. The main attractions are: Sanctuary of Saint Restituta and the archaeological museum of Pithekusa. Lacco Ameno is also famous for the thermal baths.Forio is situated on the western coast of the island of Ischia. The areas is rich of thermal sources. Near Forio we can find the splendid beaches of “Citara” and “Cava dell'isola”.The main monuments are: the church of Soccorso, the church of Saint Francesco da Paola and the church of Saint Vito.Casamicciola Terme is famous for the thermal baths. Also in Roman times as a famous thermal area. Important monuments to visit are: the church of Buon Consiglio the church of the Immacolata and the Geophysical Observatory.Barano is situated in the south-west of the island. Near Barano we can find the wonderful Maronti beach. The Thermal water springs in Ischia island are classificated in: sodic-chloride waters and bicarbonate-alcaline waters. The temperature of mineral waters changes between 15C° and 86C°.
