Acne Treatments - information on your complexion Acne is the most common skin disease in the world today. It’s estimated that 90 of adolescents endure it, and that it occurs in up to 25 of all adults. Despite these staggering statistics how to treat acne remains a mystery to many acne sufferers. This is partly due to social attitudes towards the condition and partly due to advertisements bombarding quick fix medication. We can briefly look at these two problems and their knock on effect separately before looking at how acne sufferers can help themselves.1- Social Attitudes:The Hollywood effect: We all know our modern society values ‘beauty’, the media shows images of Hollywood’s stars on a daily basis who appear faultless. This only serves to heighten our collective insecurities and there is seemingly a gulf between us and them! However a walk though any supermarket out will almost guarantee a glimpse of a magazine with a “shocking expose” of a star guard by the media. Perhaps Brittany without makeup, or worse than that with… a spot!! Sure we all have bad hair days; we all have bad skin days, but is this news worthy!? While some people may take pleasure in the fact that this shows celebs as mere humans, it also highlights the extent of the pedestal we have placed them on. When measuring ourselves against such role models it’s no surprise that people suffering from acne can be prone to self esteem issues or depression. The High School Hangover: Much of the misinformation and stigma surrounding acne stems from one single source, High school. We all know that kids and be cruel, and adolescents can take that to another level but it’s surprising how many people maintain the same misguided attitudes towards skin conditions for years after graduating.Have you ever been told to try toothpaste on your spots? No, well believe me thousands have (does it work you might ask….sorry to say but no). Can kissing spread zits? Rumors in grade 9 persist but science says no! As adults this misinformation has stayed with us, a quick look on the internet will reveal a world of wild ideas as to how to treat any form of ailment, and many seem like they may cause more damage than good.Another example of how this mentality is still present is that people who suffer from adult onset acne (which is most common in women) feel deeply mentally effected by the stigma, and relate this to how kids with acne in their school were treated. They often feel that their work colleagues will treat them differently and can lead to lack of social confidence, withdrawnness and in some cases depression. As adults we are expected to put these childish notions behind us, but since our adult personalities are formed in our adolescent years, these attitudes and misinformation leave an indelible mark on us.2 – AdvertisingAdvertising has a huge effect on our daily lives. We are surrounded by it, bombarded by it and it’s almost impossible to escape. Advertising in so many cases offers the quick fix, the one way ticket to happiness, the solution to our problems. In so many cases unfortunately it fails to deliver on these promises. Considering the budget many companies have for advertising its not surprising that many of us go to the pharmacy when we encounter a problem rather than the library! It’s near impossible to compete with the goliath power that corporations and advertising yield, yet it is possible to empower yourself in many ways to help defeat acne both physically and overcome the emotional challenges that come with it.Acne Solutions:Acne is treatable, it is simple matter of being educated concerning the problem and choosing the correct approach to treatment. As with many conditions different people will have varying degrees of success with certain treatments which is why its important stay informed of your options. Remember acne is not simply a skin condition; it is also the outward symptom of internal imbalance. The more you can do to address this, including dietary factors, exercise, topical treatments, and cleansing your system the better the results you will see. With a combined informed approach you will see a marked improvement over a few short weeks and sticking to a program that works for you will see acne in recess. Our skin has incredible healing powers and with a little help you soon will have the complexion you desire. To keep your spirits high during treatment remember, everything you learned in high school was WRONG, and even Brittany gets zits!
