High Uric Acid Levels

by Allan Roberts

When you have high uric acid levels in your blood this is called hyperuricemia. Hyperuricemia is a factor for many conditions. High uric acid can lead to uric acid kidney stones and is a factor for gout. Uric acid is a chemical created when your body breaks down substances called purines. Purines are found in foods and drinks that we consume.

Most uric acid dissolves and breaks down in your blood and travels through your body to the kidneys where it passes out in your urine. It becomes a problem when your body doesn't pass enough through your urine. If your body produces too much uric acid and doesn't remove it normally this is when you may get gout.

There are tests that can be performed by your doctor if you're suffering from symptoms of high uric acid. If your toe, foot, ankle or knee is swollen and in pain these are some of the common symptoms of high uric acid. Your doctor will take some blood tests and send them off to see what the uric acid level is in your blood. The doctor may also take a sample of the fluid in the joint that is swollen. This is a simple draw of some of the fluids that has built up. Your doctor will just stick a needle in the area and draw out some of the fluids so he can send it to the lab to check the sample for uric acid crystals. This will only hurt for a few minutes. This sample will be sent off to a lab and your doctor will know the results in just a few days.

When your tests come back and there are high levels of uric acid present, then your doctor will want to work with you to get these levels lowered. There are ways to do this. One way is to avoid foods that are high in purines. Seafood, sardines in oil, herring are very high in purines. Organ meats like liver and kidneys are also high in purines. Many foods fried in fat are also high in purines. Cream sauces have high purines in them too. These foods should be avoided until you can get your uric acid level under control.

When you get these levels lower you can slowly and moderately have some of these foods. You just can't have them on an everyday basis. Getting your uric levels down is very important to control your gout. Avoiding high purines in your food is one of the most important things to do to get these levels lower. Drink plenty of water to help flush the uric acid through your kidneys.
