Web content management systems enable it’s users to create, manage and maintain web pages with little or no technical background to carry out the tasks. While the features provided by the system ensure ease of work and efficient content management, it is equally important to maintain data integrity and ensure its security since web contents are constantly updated, reviewed or edited by a large number of systems users.Lets’ take a look at some important security features is essential in a web content management system. The system should provide with audit trail facility, whereby administrators have access to logs, that record changes so that any changes made to the web content, can be viewed. If such changes are not required the system should enable them to roll back the changes. It should be able to assign user privileges. This way the system administrator can grant or revoke control of content to editors or groups as required. Users of the system must provide authentication at the front – end and the system should also implement back-end authentication to ensure complete security. The web content management system should be able to establish the content work flow life cycle process, whereby web contents which are created, are subsequently reviewed, by an editor and approved by a reviewer. The system should see to it that this process is followed in order for content to be published in the website. This way erroneous content or content that need to be re-written can be changed before it is placed in the web page. When an editor is editing a document or webpage content, the system should be able to warn users trying to open same document. The system should provide means for the system administrator is sent an alert about successful as well as failed logins into the system. This way there is a track on the users who have logged into the system and those who failed to do so. There must be a provision to lock to IP address and also to lock domains if a situation arises that demands users to log in only from one IP address and one domain. Using the content management system, you should be able to save contents in a particular state so that you can revert back to it later. It should also provide for version control so that you can maintain versions of a page or a set of pages and edit those versions. When going in for a web content management system ensure that the system provide you with adequate security features to ensure that vital company and product information is well protected, securely accessed and safe.
