Historical Sites

Further north, investigate Chavín de Huántar, accessed from Huaraz. This site is representative of one of Peru's oldest cultures, the Chavin, which ruled in that area from approximately 1500 to 300 BC. Whether you trek or take the car, this is a huge site that can be reached.

A beauty of the Peru culture is that going from the small towns to the large cities gives you the chance to see a huge difference in how people work and live. In a huge city like Lima, the culture is modern and much like any large city anywhere. This is also largely the case in Arequipa, although not quite to the same extent.

When you get to a smaller city like Cusco, there are a lot of differences. This is a smaller city, and with it the use of other cultures has been a recent change. The younger generations tend to be the ones changing more than anyone else.

In the cities, you can get a feel for it by spending some time in spots where locals spend time. However, in the countryside, this is not so simple. And these areas are, in some ways, the most interesting because many of these pueblos are no more than a few houses grouped together where they live much as they did hundreds of years ago.

One of the best ways of interacting with these communities, generally located at a distance from towns or even a road, is by trekking. In the Cusco area, a common trek that takes you past several of them is the Lares Trek. This is a three day excursion that will take you to Ollantaytambo on the third day from where you can take a train to Machu Picchu.
