Finding a Nanny for Your Family

by Barbara Young

Whether you have children of your own or you are a child with the responsibility of taking care of an elderly parent, the care involved can be extremely time consuming. While many think that all you need to do is to find a caregiver for your children or parent, it really isn't that simple. A lot of thought must go into finding a nanny for your family or you could find your family suffering the consequences of choosing the wrong one.

Before you start your search for nannies in your area, you should first determine exactly what your family's needs are, so that you will get a better idea of what you should be looking for in a nanny. What hours will the nanny need to be available for and what will you expect from them? Do you want them to live-in or would you expect them to do the commute back and forth?

Next, you will need to determine exactly how you are going to find a nanny for your family. A lot of people choose to go through professional nanny services and, while this cost may not be something you expected, it can save you a lot of time. Each of the nannies you would interview from this type of service would have already passed a prescreening process for taking care of children and seniors, which also can give you a greater sense of comfort.

You also have the option to create an ad for a nanny on your own. Posting ads in newspapers and online will give you access to nannies who are not associated with a professional nanny services. It is also possible that friends, family, and coworkers may be able to recommend a few names to you, as well.

Regardless of how you acquire a list of prospective nannies, you will still need to go through a very thorough interview process with each one before making a decision. Starting out with a telephone interview will help you make sure whether they can meet your scheduling needs and the demands of the job itself. Once they pass the telephone portion of the interview, you can set up a time to meet them in person.

When meeting each candidate in person, you may wish to schedule it away from your home. Until you thoroughly assess them, you will not wish a complete stranger to know where you live or meet your family. If a prospective nanny does impress you at this stage, you can then check their references and set up another time for them to visit your home to see if they are a good fit for your family.

Finding a nanny for your family is a task that needs to be given a lot of time. Professional nanny services can save you some time, but either way, you will want to take time to try to get the know one a little better to be sure that you hire the most qualified individual for the job and the one who will fit in perfectly with your own family.
