Hiring solutions for New-Age Sectors

by Giridhar

This is a time when the whole country is looking at new-age sectors, industries and enterprises to take the economy forward. The whole buzz about startups is no longer an empty rhetoric! We are witnessing a sea change in the mindset of investors who seem to tilt more towards new-age sectors rather than the established ones.

The entrepreneurial scenario is filled with a spring tide of young and bold ideas that mean business and employment. Ecommerce, mobile and internet based business, freelancing, new-age healthcare services, IOT, and a lot more ideas are seeing the light of the day and are emerging as successful business ideas. While in India, more startup enterprises are inclined towards mobile and internet retailing, there are also a lot of innovative ideas that are proving to be cash cows.

The emergence of “18 and entrepreneur” in the west has not left India totally uninfluenced. More and more graduates prefer to create a definite path for themselves. Young entrepreneurs don’t hesitate to come forward with their ideas and seek funding. And, with larger institutions providing the essential angel funding, these ideas are becoming new business models. It has to be noted that some businesses which are innovative and smartphone app based have managed to pool in funds via crowdfunding.

This dynamic change in the industry has rendered earlier methods of recruitment obsolete. With layoffs and slow growth in careers bogging the larger sectors, more and more job seekers seek job opportunities with new sectors as they believe that it could provide them the right impetus to grow. Also, new-age sectors find the older modes of recruitment not fit for their needs as the older system is slow and time consuming. The result is that we have something called the speed hiring that promises to assess a candidate within 12 minutes.

Such drastic changes in the recruitment system is believed to be effective as startups and new-age enterprises might not have the wherewithal to conduct elaborate recruitment procedures that are almost ritualistic. Instead of having a huge in house HR team, businesses are seeking alternate avenues. They are relying more on staffing solution providers, and professional networks like the LinkedIn for their talent needs.

Gone are those days when job seekers search for opportunities in newspapers. Now, with all the job search activity shifted to the online platforms, staffing firms and job portals have gained more importance. Many new-age sectors rely mostly on these to provide them employees. From the perspective of the job seekers, online job boards, social professional networks, word of mouth, references, and search engines are places to look for new jobs. Having said that, one has to say that new-age sector looks lucrative to job seekers as they find a chance here to grow professionally. In this context, it’s quite important for these startups to attract the right kind of talent.

Brand matters:

A startup among other concerns has to maintain a distinct brand identity to attract proactive talent. It was seen in a staffing survey that job seekers incessantly try to improve their professional brand. So, it’s imperative that new-age sectors maintain a robust brand image that attracts positive talent.

Referrals:

In the same survey, it was also found that word of mouth and referrals were major driving forces for employees to opt for a particular company. Ideally, a new-age sector has to utilize their existing employees as brand evangelists and ambassadors to rope in better talent.

Active presence in social media and professional networks:

Though this might seem a very obvious solution, it’s mentioned as it’s quite effective. A well managed social media presence is a sure shot plan for positive branding and would create an aura around the company. Presence in professional networks and groups like the LinkedIn account for 27% of long lasting recruitments.

Go mobile:

This is something that the whole media seems to be hysterically singing about, but has truth in it. Innovation in smartphone apps have entered the staffing industry with a bang. An app for job might have sounded a pipe dream a few years ago, but has proved to be highly successful while using. An app for job search is typically a dual benefit app that finds purpose with both the recruiter and the job seeker alike. These free to download apps have job listings that are posted by employers, and a job seeker can upload resumes from his/her mobile phone. It would take about 10 seconds to get a confirmation and approximately 90 minutes to determine the feasibility. So, no screening hazzles for the employer and easy to use job search app for the employee.

It’s tough to find the right talent for any firm for their short term and long term projects, but a firm that believes in innovation would sure reap benefits.
