What to Do In New York, While Staying in New York Hostels

by Mark Etinger

If you're staying in New York hostels, you probably don't have thousands of dollars to spend on food and lodging. This article will give you the lowdown for all the good, cheap things to do in New York.

You probably want to see as much as possible while staying in your New York hostels. That means waking up early and staying up late. Five days is the ideal amount of time to stay in the Big Apple, so on your first day, wake up and go to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. One of the country's finest collections of art, you could easily spend more than a day here, but for practical purposes, three hours should suit you fine. After that, walk through Central Park. There's a lot to see, from Strawberry Fields on 72nd to the Zoo. If you have energy and are into it, walk south to Times Square and see the most energetic part of the city.

Most cheap good food is located downtown in the East Village. Aside from the occasional hot dog vendor or street meat dealer (which aren't bad ideas if you're jonesing for a cheap, tasty lunch) this region is your best bet.

As far as other museums go, the Frick Collection, the MOMA, the Guggenheim and the Whitney are all impressive and definitely worth a visit, but they all cost money, and so may not be your ideal way to spend your days. A free way to spend an afternoon and get a good sense of New York geography is taking the Staten Island Ferry from Battery Park. If you're staying in downtown hostels New York, walk there through Chinatown, stopping for dollar dumplings and winding your way west to the West Side Highway Park. This path offers great views of Jersey, which will only be bested by the views of Ellis Island and the Manhattan Skyline on the ferry.

On another day, head to Brooklyn and walk along Bedford Avenue, gazing at the booksellers on the streets and the boutiques and cafes. If it's a weekday, go out for brunch, a New Yorker's religious staple that causes hour-long waits on Sundays. If it's afternoon, go out for dinner and some beers - there are tons of great bars on the strip and surrounding area.

Walking around Manhattan from your Hostel New York to wherever you want to go is the best way to get around the city. The subways are perfect for when you're too tired or the distances are too long. And don't feel guilty if you wind up sitting outside a cafe and people watching - sometimes the freaks on the sidewalk are as entertaining as exploring a new neighborhood.
