Nurse Jobs in Forensics

by David Patullo

The field of nursing has evolved over the years, and there are now nurse jobs that are in the field of forensics. This is a field that is making its way up the ladder in popularity and has many nurses switching their specialty. If you are looking to change your career and turn to something that is challenging and exciting, this could be the switch you have been waiting for. You are going to be getting involved in nurse consulting, assisting with prosecution cases, sexual assault, and other different specialties. While there are other industries that are falling behind due to the economy, nursing in this field has seen an increase and more and more people are making a career change.

What Exactly Is Forensic Nursing?

When you hear the term "forensics", many people often times think of the hit TV shows CSI and Law and Order. Perhaps you think of the crime scenes and the nurse that is with the detective at the scene. Simply put, forensic nurses have extended, and specialized, training in the field of forensics, collecting evidence and more. These nurses become the liaison between both the criminal justice system as well as the medical profession. Having combined a highly trained and skilled nurse with the skills of an investigative prowess, you have created a force to be reckoned with by criminals and often times you become their worst enemy.

You are going to be working in the Emergency Room for the most part, and are going to be the first to come in contact with the patient the minute they enter the facility. There are times when it gets difficult to examine and analyze patients, and when you think about the hectic routines of the ER and you have one mess that can have things going downhill rather fast.

Salary of Forensic Nurse Jobs

The pay rate or salary of a forensic nurse can vary based on location and facility you are working in. The area of the country you are in is going to play a major role in the salary. You are going to be working in a hospital for the most part and for the most part, a hospital that schedules as being on call will set a rate of at least $1 - $4 for that on call shift. If you are on call and are called in for emergencies, you will receive a pay rate of at least 1 ½ times your normal rate. This is not always the case and again depends on a multitude of factors. There are some places that are not going to pay on a hourly basis yet on a per assignment base. This can range from $100 - $400 ad depends on what the agreed amount is when you are hired. There are even some places that will pay forensic nurses anywhere from $26 an hour to as high as $100 an hour.

These types of nurse jobs are in high demand and are something that many are changing into. The educational requirements are going to be extensive, and for those who are looking for a challenging and always exciting position, consider a career in forensic nursing.
