Out of the Fog and Into Spiritual Awareness
Picture yourself getting into your car on a dark, cold morning. You are in a place that is unfamiliar to you and your car is parked in the middle of a field on a dirt road. There are some trees in the field and you notice that there are also many obstacles-rocks, ruts, trees, cows, etc. You can't make things out clearly because there is also a thick fog that surrounds you. As you get into your car you notice that the windows are fogged over, so you need to turn on the defroster. You intend to drive to a town called “Happiness” as safely as possible.
You turn on your headlights and put the car in gear but the engine isn't warm yet so the defroster doesn't clear the windshield. You must go slowly to avoid going off the road or hitting something. Soon the defroster clears a hole in the windshield. You can see a little more of the road through the fog. This clarity allows you to go a little faster. The fog is still thick though and it is slow going. You want to reach your goal sooner so you speed up a bit and hit a huge rock by the side of the road that you couldn't see. You blame the rock and slow down. You realize that you should go slow to avoid trouble but you are impatient so you speed up again. The road takes a sharp left and you don't. This time you hit a tree. You curse the tree and back up to find the road again.
Now the defroster has cleared your windshield and you can see much better, but it's still dark and foggy. You understand from past experience that if you try to go too fast in these conditions you may have an accident. You are an excellent driver however, and the windshield is now clear. You speed up and are doing fine until a wandering cow crosses in front of you. You hit the brakes, turn right to avoid the cow and hit another tree. You curse the cow and the tree, back out into the road and start off again at a slower pace.
All the while you are learning what works and what doesn't along the road that you are traveling. The fog begins to lift and you can see farther down the road. You can speed up a little. You now have more awareness of your surroundings and more experience about your journey. As the fog lifts you recognize dangers in the distance and can avoid them. You can't go as fast as you'd like because it's still dark and you need to be in control. The farther you travel the better you can see and eventually, the sun starts coming up over the eastern horizon.
Now you can see the road and objects and obstacles much clearer. You can see beyond your headlights and into the valley below. As the sun emerges, you are able to bring the car up to full speed without the immediate threat of running into anything in your path. You are able to go directly to your goal at a sure, safe speed.
The Light of Day
Putting spirituality back into your life is like clearing the fog and letting the sunshine show you the clearest way of your path. What I mean when I say “putting spirituality back into your life” is that you have never been without it. The spirit part of you has always been with you but, when you sleepwalk through life, it's like driving in a fog. Until the bright light of spirituality is remembered in your consciousness, you will continue to be unaware of the true power that you possess. The authentic power of the spirit. This is the power that resides within all of us and allows us to create our lives as we choose. This power resonates from the core of our being, which is love. This power is our direct link to the source of all things. If we have had this spirit with us all along, why hasn't it lit our paths before? Actually, it has. The question isn't “Where has your spirit been?” The question is “Where have you been?” Frequently, the answer is that you have been in the fog.
