Health Club Horror Stories

by Kal Gunay

Every January, millions of people venture to get in great shape by joining a fitness center. From losing weight to increasing muscle, the goals are a plenty and are of wide variety. The easiest way to getting in great shape is joining a local fitness center but there can be some serious pitfalls to watch out for. Here are a few tips and strategies to use when out searching for the right health club for you.

First, and foremost, most gyms will offer up a free trial ranging anywhere from a single day pass all the way up to a week. Be sure to take advantage of this as the nostalgia of being on the road to a brand new body will quickly go away as soon as you experience the first little checkstop.

When you go through your trial your tour guide who usually is a commissioned salesperson, will take you through to show off all of the features and benefits the club has to offer. The reason why commissioned salesperson is noted is because many health club salespeople are aggressive in attempting to "close" you. Lesson number 1 is never sign up for a health club membership on the first visit, even if you fall in love with it. By walking away you put yourself in the driver's seat. First a lot of times, depending on how bad they want your business you can find a phone call the next day with an offer that's better than the first one.

The second reason is for the one listed above. You want to learn how much your business is wanted. By walking from the first deal, you're testing the follow-up skills of the staff.

Another thing to look out for is how crowded it is in the gym at different times of the day. Be sure to work out at least once in the morning peak hours and evening peak hours. This way you can see just how congested the facility can get. One of the inconveniences many people see for the first time is that there are never machines available during busy hours.

Last, pay close attention to how clean the gym is. It's very common to hear of outbreaks of staph infections in fitness centers, not to mention common colds and flu's transferred very easily through the health club. Look to see when and how often common areas are mopped and sanitized.

These are just basic steps you can use to protect yourself from getting a bad deal when registering for a health club membership. Some additional tips of course are to check local reviews, social media accounts, asking friends for reviews and checking with resources like the Better Business Bureau.
