Three-Phase Power Station Turns On More Lights And Creates Jobs In Guinea

by Will Diesel

Conakry, the capital and largest city in Guinea, will soon have more power thanks to a three-phase power station project named Tombo 1, Tombo 2 and Kipe.

A Dallas, full-service power plant solutions provider has teamed up with Brazilian conglomerate Asperbras to provide 100 mega watts of power in what is known as Africa's administrative, communications and economic centre. The power will be dispersed over three locations.

"There was an existing plant there that's being razed," says Richard Eder, Construction & Service Project Manager at the Dallas-based compay, who is responsible for gathering material for the project.

The power plant is currently in its first phase, which involves engineering, procurement and construction.

The 100 mega watts of power will be dispersed over three different locations. The first is Tombo 1, which will produce 24 MW, the second is Tombo 2 offering 25 MW and the third location is Kipe producing 51 MW of power.

Chief Financial Officer Scott Johnson says that the three-phase power station locations must be complete by the end of the year. Tombo 1 is projected to reach completion by June 20th. Tombo 2 will be done in either September or October and Kipe will be finished by December 31st.

Some parts of the city did have a form of power, while other parts had none.

"As I understand it there were parts of the city where they did not have power and in the areas where they did, it was not very reliable," says Johnson. "So this equipment is to go in and supplement what they already have to provide electricity where there was none and to stabilize the power where there already is."

The constructing of this three-phase power plant will not only provide more lights for the people of Guinea, but also positively affect the city's economic outlook. Eder says the Guinea government is very interested in training individuals to build the power plant, which would result in job creation for the people of Conakry. It's a skill, he says of operating a power plant, and there are various opportunities there. While Eder is unsure of the number of employees that will be hired to do the work, he knows the type of work that will be needed. The list includes pipe fitters, electricians, mass electricians for supervisory and safety, project managers, operations managers, laborers, concrete finishers, heavy equipment operators and basically any job that relates to construction.
