When embarking on the powder coating process your best option is to choose a reliable and highly experienced provider in your industry product who will understand your products needs.
There are many items to be considered in the coating process and although you don't have to be the expert being able to understand some of the factors in the coating process and some of the likely trouble spots may help in your initial discussions with your coating provider.
Adhesion is critical and at times powder coating finishes do not exhibit the correct texture and colours that have been ordered. Hence, be sure to discuss surface preparation processes, the methodology of grain size distribution and the history of the powder used by your provider.
Poor gloss is another problem that can occur and therefore you should discuss oven temperatures and how your providers oven system operates and the consistency they achieve with the gloss finishes on previous similar jobs to yours.
Flaking needs to be avoided at all costs and flaking usually occurs when there are very rough welded seams and rust and water on the pieces that are to be powder coated. If these types of problems exist this will cause blistering and flaking and result in a poor finish. Hence, pre-treatment processes should be examined and questioned in detail prior to any job start.
Orange Peel refers to a poor finish where the powder coating on the part is too thick and this results in an uneven finish. Hence, once again question your coating provider on this and view sample products your supplier has powder coated previously.
Stripe Formation refers to the formation of stripes on the finished product. This is resolved with the correct connection between the speed of the powder coating application and the number of moving guns that are being used to coat your products.
Uneven Coating is a problem to avoid and usually is uneven coating is caused by the grain size distribution of the powder being too coarse. A discussion on this topic with your coating provider should eliminate this problem from occurring.
