How Long Do IVF Procedures Take?

by David Patullo

There are many couples who have tried having a child for an extended period of time, and some couples have been trying for years. There are many assisted treatments such as in vitro fertilization and now you can finally have a child of your own. The first thing to do is to get in touch with a fertility specialist and see what options you have and what your overall health is. There are certain factors that play a role in your success rate of IVF and it can take some time to complete the process.

Blood Work

Before you can begin, there are some tests that you are going to have to complete. There are certain blood tests that are going to have to be performed to check things such as hormone levels as well as checking to make sure you are drug and disease free. You will have to wait for these results before you can move ahead in the IVF process.

Ovarian Suppression

There are some facilities and clinics that will begin with receiving Lupron injections prior to your vitro fertilization cycle. The purpose of these injections is to prevent your ovaries from ovulating too early and also to suppress your ovaries.

Stimulation of Ovaries

There is going to be more blood work as well as an ultrasound done at the time that your period starts. There will be another set of injections that you will have to give yourself to help with stimulating your ovaries. You will continue both medications until your fertility doctor retrieves your eggs. This will take place in another 2 weeks.

Retrieving the Eggs and Transferring

You are going to be given a HCG injection the night before your procedure. This is going to help you ovulate and once your eggs are retrieved, sperm is gathered and the eggs are placed in a petri dish in a lab for fertilization. They will be in an incubator-like environment for 48 hours. Once that happens, they are going to be implanted into your uterus with a catheter.

Pregnancy Test and Progresterone Support

Once your eggs have been transferred, you will need to continue taking progresterone until you go back to your doctor to ensure that you are indeed pregnant. You will be given a test about 2 weeks after the eggs are implanted. From the blood work to the implantation the cycle could take from 4-6 weeks.

You will be guided through the process and you should ensure that the staff at your chosen clinic is supportive. There are many times when the first attempt will not go through, but the more you try the more success you are going to have. You should keep in mind to research as much as you can and learn as much as you can about IVF treatments before getting yours done. This will allow you to know what to expect and how to prepare. In vitro fertilization has been helping many couples have children of their own.
