How home installation will save you money
Did you know that around a third of all heat you generate in your home is lost through your walls and your attic? Having your home insulated properly will save you money on your heating bills over time. Many homes in the UK do not have anywhere near the recommended thickness of roof insulation. This means that all these homes are letting all the heat they generate raise up and out of your attic. The correct about of insulation which is recommending is just over 10 inches.
Another place your heat could be escaping is the cavity in your walls. Cavity wall insulation is very effective and will pay for itself over time. If your home was built after 1920 then your external walls are made up of two layers with a small cavity gap. By filling this cavity gap with insulation you could cut you're heating bills by up to half. You will also be producing far less CO2 emissions which is good for our environment.
You can only have wall cavity insulation if your external walls are in good condition. Also the cavity gap between your walls needs to be at least 50mm wide. If you live in a new home which was built in the last ten years then your walls should already be insulated. But it is worth getting it checked just to be sure. Cavity wall insulation cannot be done by yourself so you will have to bring in the experts. The insulation can be made out mineral wool, foamed insulants or granules. Either would do and all are manufactured to the correct British standards. An expert installer will be able to advice you what is best suited to your home, or you could ask the Energy saving trust what they recommend. They offer free advice and will be more than happy to help.
There are grants available for insulation and these can be found looking on the Energy Saving Trust website. If you're on an income related benefit the costs to you will be nothing or next to nothing. Our UK government has high targets to reach regarding reducing our countries CO2 emissions and offering grants is part of their incentive in achieving this. If every home in the UK had cavity wall insulation installed, we as a country could save around £690 million and around 4 million tonnes of CO2 every year. This is massive and very achievable.
With roof insulation you can install this yourself if you choose. All you need to do is measure your attic and go along to your local DIY shop and buy the right amount of insulation. Remember you need a minimum of 10 inches thickness. If you already have some insulation in your attic, just lay the new insulation over the top.
