The Treatment Of Alcohol Dependency In A Holistic Way

by Michael Henderson

Society has had to deal with the problem of alcohol abuse for many years and it has not shown any signs of abating. The problem is that most people don't regard alcohol to be as serious issue as taking drugs. Perhaps because drugs are illegal and alcohol isn't. It might take something drastic occurring in a person's life before they realize that they have a problem with alcohol. The problem we have with alcohol in society should be with as much vigor and conviction as we have with drug addiction because alcohol kills more people than most known drugs do.

It's difficult for people to openly declare that they are alcoholics. The alcoholics will normally go for a traditional recovery process like the Alcoholic Anonymous' twelve-step program. Most recovery methods are the same and same remedies proposed for every person irrespective of their unique circumstances.

The one- glove-fits-all approach might not suit everyone and hence individuals who fail on alcoholics programs are often blamed for not wanting to work hard. It's simple to blame the addict rather than putting the blame on a thoroughly tested treatment program. There should be alternative treatments for alcohol addicts. For instance:

• Rather than pushing an alcoholic to deal with his problem whilst going through everyday life, put him in substance abuse treatment centers where he wouldn't have to tackle anything else except his addiction to alcohol. This means that, maybe we need more alcohol recovery centers as much as we need drug rehab centers instead of just referring people to support structures and groups with the hope that talking about it will be enough.

• Addicts find themselves thinking of nothing else but their next drink of alcohol. This has more to do with them not having anything else they can be enthusiastic or find a good enough reason for pursuing. A good alcohol abuse treatment should equip one with the tools to refocus and rediscover their objective or passion, or else, help find another passion and objective.

• It's important to see the way it touches all facets of a person's being. There's more to tackle than just one issue. You need to tackle the problem holistically by nourishing the body, the soul and mind.

Just doing these three things can go a long way in ensuring that everyone seeking help with alcohol addiction gets a fair chance.
