Electronics Deals and the Nanny State
Since the passage of the Patriot Act, the government has been ramping up surveillance of US citizens and foreign nationals. With electronics deals available on a bevy of surveillance equipment, you can get in on the fun of monitoring others too. Move over Uncle Sam, there is a new player in the game of surveillance and his name is vigilante justice.
Online shopping deals, a fear of extreme Islam, and the Internet have led to a renaissance of people watching each other. There are over 30 million surveillance cameras in the United States alone! That number may seem large but in actually the number soars above 30 million because it is hard to account for private citizens who bought surveillance equipment on deal websites or in spy shops. Surveillance and forensic science have led to dramatic increases in the number of people caught and successfully prosecuted for many types of crime.
Who are these new cyber sleuths? Many are hobbyists. They started small with a spy pen or spy watch from any number of deal websites. They started recording and they were hooked. Others are people who fear government intrusion into their lives and want a recorded record of themselves and their property should the government make inappropriate claims against them. Online shopping deals put electronics in the financial grasp of everyone.
Surveillance can also be fun for regular people watching. In the same way it can be soothing to look out a window, it can be soothing to gaze at a live feed of a video camera. People are at their most natural when they don't know they are being watched.
Surveillance also makes you and your family safer. Most of the time just having a camera visible or a sign saying a camera is watching is a crime deterrent. Video surveillance can also be useful in litigation, determining the cause of accidents, and capturing slips, trips, falls and other hilarious 'oops' moments. With the Internet these hilarious videos can go viral, bringing you a brief flash of Internet fame.
If you are considering getting into the surveillance game, I would suggest buying things on an until sold out basis. Until sold out deals tend to be the cheapest and you don't want to spend too much before you determine if surveillance is the hobby for you. Watching other Americans is part of being an American. With survaliance technology it is easier than ever.
