Fly Me To The Moon

by Tamara Jacobs

Frank Sinatra famously sang, "Fly me to the moon let me sing amongst those stars let me see what spring is like on Jupiter and Mars in other words, hold my hand, in other words, baby kiss me. Fill my heart with song, let me sing forever more, you are all I long for, all I worship and adore in other words please be true, in other words I love you."

While for him, a trip to the moon meant falling in love, for some it means something else. It might mean:

1. Landing your dream job:

A lot of naïve students are convinced that they come out of university and are offered their dream job. And if not the exact role, then certainly a position in the company with the opportunity to move up. Unfortunately that's not the way it works. Instead we have to pay our dues with internships, very junior positions at very small companies and lots of freelance work on the side. We push forward, work our best and hardest and continuously put ourselves out there until one day the perfect opportunity is offered at the perfect company. For some, that might feel a bit like a trip to the moon.

2. A much needed break:

Adulthood comes with a lot of strings attached. To the young it all seems so easy - a steady job, a loving family and a home to call their own. This tends to be more of a façade than anything else. Families might be loving but they are also work. Children need mentoring and nurturing in every way, and husbands and wives, well they fight as all couples do. Work might be steady, maybe even well paid, but nothing is ever certain and often people find their days repetitive and are always wondering how a different job might change their general mood. Even if things are good, it's still work so when vacation time comes and you have the chance to escape to a remote little cottage or a beach somewhere, that might feel a bit like a trip to the moon.

3. An unforgettable experience:

If you actually want to fly to the moon, you might take a hot air balloon flight. While you won't actually reach the moon you'll get pretty high while still being exposed to the clean atmospheric air that surrounds you. With the world beneath you and the clouds above, the silence of the skies and the calm of the earth, you might feel like you're on a trip to the moon.

Who knew that there were so many ways to get to the moon without actually going there?
