What Hands Will Dress Dolly Determines What Closures To Use

by JoAnn Gagnon

What About Closure?

To sew on a button or not to sew on a button, that's the question. As it comes to deciding on a closure for dolly's clothing it is helpful to make use of things other than buttons as the real closure. You should, however, make dolly's garment appear as if it is buttoned by using different means than sewing little buttons to the outside giving the item a button appearance. When deciding on what type of closure to apply, ask yourself if an adult or child will be dressing dolly most of the time. Remember children's hands don't have quite the skillfulness and dexterity for some potential closures.

Velcro is a wonderful alternative for several of dolly's closures. Just remember if the Velcro is on a shirt or dress, the doll's hair might get caught in it and cause other problems. If you choose to use Velcro, cut the length that you need and cut the Velcro in half lengthwise to reduce bulk and adapt to the small size of the apparel. Although stick-on Velcro may sound like a wonderful idea at the time it will gum up the sewing machine needle, causing other problems. Sticky-backed Velcro will come off in the laundry eventually so it is best to sew on Velcro. After you have attached the Velcro, attach a few delicate buttons on the outside of the closure and this will provide the look of a buttoned closing. Velcro can be used as a "look alike" for a zipper closure by extending the Velcro ¼" past the outside edge of the item of clothing.

Small size snaps are hand sewn and a different choice for a closure on the doll's clothing. Remember that like tiny buttons, these small snaps can be difficult and upsetting for small hands. If you are planning to sew a zipper on dolly's clothing remember to each time sew the zipper in while the fabric is flat in front of you to begin putting together the piece of clothing. Remember that Velcro can make a zipper look as mentioned earlier.

When making an outfit for dolly it is very important to know the primary subject that will dress her/him. Small hands don't have as much skill as large hands and more mature hands can many times have trouble with arthritis that may create some hindrances. Clothing a doll should be a enjoyable, exciting thing to do particularly at holidays or special events. Once you have identified the primary person in the dolls life you can better choose the closures that will be the best for her garments.
