Thinking By Windows

by Tamara Jacobs

Windows make a room. They let in light and set a natural backdrop for the surrounding space. Some of our deepest thoughts our had standing in front of a window looking out at all that stands before us.

These moments include but are not limited to:

1. Staring at a city skyline from our penthouse:

Condominiums are being built with a lot of glass these days. Glass suits the modernity of current architecture and offers fabulous views. If you are lucky enough to be facing the city's skyline and high enough to appreciate it, you'll probably agree that you spend a lot of time standing and staring at it. Staring out at an urban landscape can make you feel powerful, in charge and encourages pensive thoughts. In the morning you can watch the city wake up, in the afternoon you can watch them go about their lives, and in the night you can watch as the sun falls down, the streets light up and the vampires of the night come out to play.

2. Staring out to sea:

The other day I had the pleasure of visiting a house with one of the most incredible views in Geneva. It was high up and surrounded by glass. There was a deck with lounge chairs and an infinity pool that, from behind, quite literally looked like it was falling into the Lake Geneva. I could have spent weeks staring out at sailboats, sunsets and sunny days.

3. Riveting over rooftops:

I sleep on the top floor of my house. The room is in the style of an attic, with low, slanted ceilings and hardwood floors. Over my bed I have a large skylight. When it's open I can stand with half my body poking out of my roof and stare out at the rooftops that surround me and the people who walk on the street below me. When the night is quiet it is one of the most peaceful places to be.

4. Gawking over gardens:

Every now and then one finds themselves on a fabulous property. They are placed in a guest room that overlooks the most stunning gardens, well manicured and beautifully furnished. From mazes of hedges, ducks ponds, gazebos and outdoor dining areas there is all that's needed to enjoy an afternoon in the outdoors.

I don't know about you, but I could stare out of windows for hours. In front of them, I can be deep in thought while I watch the world pass me by.
