The Best Supplements For Skin Care

by John Bradstreet

In order to look our best it is important to nourish and protect our skin. The market is full of skin care products that are designed to do just this. They are often enriched with exotic extracts and/or vitamins. But how do you know which one to choose to correct a particular skin problem? This is why understanding which are the best supplements and how to choose them for a particular problem will get you quicker results. So let's take a look at the more important vitamins we need and how they benefit our skin.

VITAMIN A

This vitamin is probably the most popular one being used for skin care because it offers so many benefits. It can help people of all ages to have healthier looking skin. Many dermatologists recommend vitamin A for the treatment of acne. It can be applied to the skin with lotions or creams and taken internally. It also has the ability to smooth skin for those who have stretch marks. It is effective in treating eczema and psoriasis and is often given as a natural and alternative remedy for this condition. It is effective in treating minor skin wounds such as burns, scrapes and bruises. Many creams and ointments used to treat these wounds will contain vitamin A. As we get older it can also reduce wrinkles as well as help to fade age and sun spots.

B VITAMINS

If you have dry skin B vitamins can be of benefit to you. Because they are enclosed in moisture in the skin cells they are a very effective moisturizer. They are also used in many hair care products for the same reason. The B-Complex vitamins are actually made up of eight different vitamins and are water soluble. This means that they are not stored by the body and need to be replaced regularly. B vitamins also offer substantial anti-aging benefits.

VITAMIN C

This is important in forming and maintaining collagen. Collagen is the connective tissue that the body uses. It is found in skin, joints and cartilage. While vitamin C can aid the skin in healing wounds the primary benefit is to tighten and strengthen the skin giving support and shape to the body. Because it is also a powerful anti oxidant it can prevent damage done to the skin by free radicals. It can also protect from the damaging effects of the sun. Think of it as a natural sunscreen.

VITAMIN E

This also has some powerful moisturizing properties for skin. Many times vitamin E is used in conjunction with vitamin C. There are two reasons for this. First, vitamin C can sometimes cause dryness and vitamin E will counteract this and secondly vitamin C will help to prevent the disintegration of vitamin E.

VITAMIN K

This is effective in treating those dark circles under the eyes. A note of caution is needed here. If you are on blood thinners or are pregnant vitamin K is not recommended. As with any supplementation program it is important to speak with your doctor before starting it.

In summary, in order to have healthy and vibrant looking skin it is important to understand which vitamins will be most beneficial for a particular condition. Once you are armed with this knowledge you can concentrate on the supplements that will be most effective to you in reaching your goals.
