Common Coffee Mistakes in Restaurants
Bad coffee can ruin a meal…
Coffee is one of the key ingredients that makes every restaurant meal complete. Without it some people feel that their whole evening is ruined and maybe even more so if they do get coffee and it is bad. Unfortunately this is a common occurrence. With the focus of restaurants generally more on the food than on their coffee, its ingredients and execution can be left as a bit of an afterthought.

Here are some of the main mistakes restaurant's make when it comes to coffee:

Poor coffee

After having forked out for umpteen steaks and fancy fish for the highly paid chefs to dish out, coffee for some less informed restaurateurs can seem like an extra expense. This can lead to them selecting a cheaper type of coffee than what their diners might have hoped. The quality of coffee is all important and can make a huge difference to how well people regard the meal in its conclusion.

Lack of coffee training

Another reason why coffee suffers in restaurants is due to a lack of coffee training. Top baristas working in proper coffee shops spend years making coffee all day every day and still don't always get it right. The right amount of pressure running through the ground coffee, the right temperature of water and correctly frothed milk are all key points in the many stages of making a good coffee. Restaurants can't expect their untrained waiting staff to know how to make coffee to a high standard without a reasonable amount of proper training.

Faulty equipment

Some restaurants may have the best coffee and talented baristas on staff but often if there isn't a focus on coffee in the restaurant then coffee machines can be allowed to fall into disrepair. Even some of the top places to eat in Brighton are guilty of this and could do with a real coffee machine engineer looking at their machines. Clogged lines, faulty pressure gauges and other problems can have a big effect on the coffee produced. Italian restaurants Brighton seem to be the real stand out coffee makers though.

Time

In a busy restaurant there is unfortunately just not enough time to spend the amount of time making coffee that should be set aside for it. When the place is jumping and tables need their food, often coffee is made in a hurry and without care. In a perfect world, every good restaurant would have its own barista whose only job would be to make coffee.
