First thing to do, from what I mentioned above is to check yourself! Did you have enough sleep, have you eaten enough food for the long ride, or are you not feeling sick? Don’t try to drive if you’re exhausted, this will lead you to drowsiness which is very dangerous when driving. Next, check your car, is there a problem in your car, its wheels, do you have enough fuel? Remember you will carry your own life in the road, so it’s better if you have enough preparation.
Before hitting the road make it sure that you familiarize your route and the local traffic laws. If you’re not familiar with places better have a GPRS in your car or bring a road atlas and detailed map for backup.
Familiarize and surf the internet for traffic updates or you can listen to radio traffic news, so you can avoid it and change your route if possible.
If you have a companion during your road trip, better ask him to assist you in driving for at least one hour. This will help you to rest for a while and to keep an eye on the road to avoid accident. If you’re driving alone turn on your car’s radio and listen to some country music, but texting- it’s a NO-NO, numerous studies suggest that using cellphone or texting while driving is merely associated with driving drunk.
Take a break when you are having a long ride. Pull over your vehicle on the road for at least 15-30 minutes this will help you rest for a while.
Don’t ever try to drive too fast; this is one of the causes of fatal accidents on the road. Don’t over speed your car especially if you’re not familiar with bumps and turns of the road you are in.
Be familiar of the traffic ahead, beside and behind you, be flexible in driving. Don’t feel pressured if someone is driving too fast, just focus on your direction. Avoid distractions, such as eating, drinking, and listening to a very loud music while you are traveling around town.
If you are travelling together with your family, or if you have children inside your car don’t allow them to be mischievous while you are driving. This can be very distractive. Buckled them to their seats all the way because sometimes too much noise can distract your concentration in driving.
Lastly, always use caution when you’re changing lanes, use your car signals to avoid accidents and commotions on the road.
