Save Money on Memory Book Materials Using These Tips

by Debbie Luker

Scrapbooking can be a costly obsession. From patterned paper, accents, trappings, and cardstock, the costs can mount up quickly. I've been scrapbooking for about 7 years and at first, I went to all the expensive specialty scrapbook supply outlets, where things are more expensive. Over the past several years though, I have found some super ways to save money.

Scrapbooking-

Materials for less. The most clear way to save money is to find a store that offers scrapbook materials at a discount. I have realized that online outlets actually have lower prices than offline outlets. One example is they carry the Hermafix Dotto Glue Refill for $3.99, that's a whole two bucks less than at the two local scrapbooking shops close to my neighborhood. The only shortcoming of purchasing your scrapbook materials online is that you'll have to wait a day or two... or four. So I wanted to find an online supplier that ships same day. Another thing to consider on a scrapbook materials website is free shipping. The best ones will offer free shipping if your order exceeds a given figure. The lower that figure, the better! The lowest I have seen is $25 and that is pretty darn good.

Cutting Paper Costs-

Another way to save big bucks on scrapbook materials is by using 12x12 paper. You get more square inches of paper for the money than buying 8 " x 11" paper. It also goes a longer way{ in that you can use the scraps in creating additional embellishments. Also, there are a plethora of cardstock colors. You can always use cardstock on a layout. Sometimes, that's all I use. That way, you don't use and therefore you don't need to buy patterned paper. This cuts down costs a lot as patterned papers are fairly pricey.

Saving on Trappings-

A way to save more cash is by reducing the number of scrapbook materials, like embellishments. The actual focal point of pages is supposed to be the photos. You don't have to spend money on a lot of little thingamajigs and you'll save time too by not having to make something special.

If you just can't endure a life without using embellishments, buy generic embellishment materials that can be used on various layouts instead of buying embellishments for use on one particular page. For example, buy fibers in a package that has several different colors. Tags are another great embellishment that will look nice on any layout.

Scrapbooking does not have to be expensive. Keep in mind that the whole point of scrapbooks is the pictures and the memories that go along with them. It's not about how expensive or elaborate each page is.
