Kickboxing Gloves and Gear – Buying According to your Fight Style

by Amos Bouwkamp

Kickboxing has become a widely popular sport all over the world over the past couple of decades and today it is right up there with the top fighting sports. Just like in any fighting sport, kickboxing will require you to purchase equipment for protection purposes. Choosing the proper kick boxing gear may seem overwhelming to someone who has never done it before. There are many types of pads and gloves to choose from which makes choosing the correct kick boxing gear according to your fight style highly important. Choosing the wrong gear or gear that does not fit properly on your body could result in serious injuries.

The first and most important part of the kick boxing gear that you will have to choose are kickboxing gloves. When choosing kickboxing gloves you will have many factors to keep in mind since they can greatly affect the outcome. The first thing to consider when purchasing gloves is the purpose you will be using them for. It isn't recommended to use your kickboxing gloves that are made for sparring during actual fights and vice versa. The gloves will generally vary in weight between 8oz – 16oz and the rule of thumb to remember is that the heavier the glove is, the less impact it will have on opponents. This is why most kickboxing gloves that are heavier will be used for training purposes. This gives you a reduced weight when you get into an actual fight which ultimately makes you gain in punching speed. Normally you will want to get heavily padded kickboxing gloves for training, sparring and heavy bag purposes in order to minimize your injury potential. However, when you get to an actual fight, gloves that are too padded will not hurt your opponent which will bring you at a disadvantage.

The next thing to consider when buying kickboxing gloves is the size. The only way to know what your size is would be by trying them on. The kickboxing gloves should fit comfortably and be somewhat tight without being too tight. You must also keep in mind that you will be wearing wrist wraps underneath the gloves which makes it a good idea to wear the wraps when trying on the gloves in a store. Wearing kickboxing gloves that are too loose will result in injuries, but wearing gloves that are too tight will also result in injuries, thus making it important to get a perfect fit.

When purchasing kickboxing gloves and other kick boxing gear you will want to remember to purchase wrist wraps. These will minimize the risks of damaging your wrists by protecting the small bones in your wrists. You should always wear the wraps when fighting and while training in order to benefit from the best protection. It is a good idea to buy your equipment from a reputable store such as Top Ten Canada in order to make sure that you get the absolute best quality. You don't want to get cheap when it comes to protecting your body from injuries.
