About Liquid Dieting
Liquid diets are a form of dieting when the person only lives on liquids, as the name would suggest. They work by limiting your calorific intake by doing so. Some of these diets are based only on consuming fluids, and these fluids will actually replace the meals that you would normally eat. While other forms of liquid diets are based on mainly liquids but then a healthy, proper meal in the evening each day.
They come in the form of sticking to a plan by yourself, or being supervised by a medical professional whilst using prescription liquids.
These diets can help people who are extremely obese, by reducing the calorific intake for a little while, say a few weeks, and the slowly reintroducing food into the diet, weight can be lost and then maintained at a manageable speed so as not to go out of control.
The metabolism, though, will slow and the hunger that comes as a result, the person doesn't get back into healthy eating habit because of the cravings. Because of the serious health risks, this type of diet is only prescribed to people who are extremely obese when the obesity hazards are worse than the hazards that would occur, should the person go on a liquid diet.
Brands of liquid diets that incorporate normal food intake are generally more accepted by medical professionals than ones that have a very low calorie count and no exercise.
According to MayoClinic.com, though, diets that are based mainly on liquid should not be followed for more than 2 or 3 days. When used for more than that amount of time, they only provide you with a minimal amount of calories, next to no energy and nutrition that is not good enough for your body.
Constipation, the feeling of being light-headed and fainting are just some of the side effects of this form of dieting. When the metabolism goes too low, it becomes lazy and then doesn't work fast enough when one returns to normal food based diets, so weight is often put back on anyway.
The fast weight loss that happens when you go on a liquid diet can also result in the loss of mass in the muscles, and not just your muscles on your limbs, muscles like you heart and other vital organs too.
In theory, when you burn off more calories than you consume, you will lose weight. However, the loss of calories when one transfers from a normal diet to a liquid one can be so dramatic that the side effects often outweigh the advantages that can occur if done in a measured and medically overseen environment.
In order to lose weight in a healthy manner, you need to change your eating habits so that they become long term and not just based on some fad, momentary diet that works in the short term, because otherwise you will go back to the weight that you were at, maybe more, in the first place, because the diet that you went on wasn't designed to last in the long term.
