Multiple sclerosis is caused by damage to myelin sheath which surrounds neurons. As a result of this damage, signals transmitted by brain do not reach to concerned organs. It is usually observed in persons belonging to the age group 20 to 40.
Symptoms differ from person to person. Sometimes, a single symptom persists for a longer period. Some may experience symptoms appearing once and vanishing completely. In some cases, symptoms may become worse after some weeks.
Most of the symptoms are unpredictable and thus difficult to diagnose. However, they can be managed with medications and a person can lead an independent life.
Classification of symptoms:-
1.Primary symptoms: - They are caused by damage to myelin sheath around the nerves in brain and spinal cord. Scarring thwarts the communication between brain and spinal cord. It may lead to bowel problems, paralysis, numbness, weakness or tremors. These problems can be controlled by medicines and rehabilitation treatments.
2.Secondary symptoms: - Primary symptoms often worsen into secondary symptom. Inability to empty bladder may lead to bladder infection. These symptoms are treatable but doctors try to avoid their occurrence.
3.Tertiary symptoms: When these symptoms are present, daily life of the patient is affected. For e.g. a person becomes unable to walk, cannot go to his job. Tertiary symptoms are related to further deterioration social, emotional and physical symptoms.
Common Symptoms of MS:-
1.Abnormal sensations: - It is also known as pins and needles sensation. Common symptoms of numbness, burning, itching or tearing pain. These symptoms are manageable.
2.Bladder problems: - Bladder problems like constipation are very common among people suffering from this condition. They may lose control over the process of emptying the bladder. Gastric problems are common in 8 about every 10 individuals.
3.Difficulty walking: - This condition can cause weakness of muscles or spasms. Individuals may feel numbness in legs. Walking or undertaking any physical activity becomes troublesome. Muscle spasms affect about 40% of the affected people.
4.Dizziness: - Individuals experience extreme fatigue. Daytime sleepiness is commonly observed in these individuals. Dizziness and lightheadedness are also common.
5.Sexual difficulties: - Vaginal dryness, reduced sexual drive, erection problems and losing sensitivity to touch are commonly found sexual problems. Both men and women become less responsive to touch.
6.Speech problems: - Speech becomes difficult because of slurred or nasal pronunciation. This problem worsens in advanced stage when the person experiences difficulty swallowing.
7.Thinking problems: - Individuals suffering from multiple sclerosis have problems concentrating. Half of them have poor memory, impaired thinking and loss of ability to concentrate. Day-to-day tasks may also get affected. However, no damage is caused to ability to understand intellectual readings or understanding speech.
8.Tremors: About half of people suffer from minor to major tremors every day.
9.Vision problems: - Vision problems are identified by blurry or grey vision affecting only one eye. This condition usually disappears of its won. Temporary vision loss is also possible.
