Troubleshooting When Your Toshiba Laptop Won't Charge The Battery
Unfortunately, there may come a time when you sit down to charge up your trusty laptop and discover that your Toshiba laptop won't charge the battery. When this unfortunate occurrence takes place, you need to know how to troubleshoot it to determine exactly where the problem lies.
First Things First
The first thing you will want to do is to verify that the problem actually doesn't lie within the realm outside of the laptop. This can be done simply by plugging the PC into a different outlet, preferably one that you know 100% for sure is working properly, and seeing if you get the same result.
If the laptop still won't charge up, then you at least know that it's not the outlet you were using. Lots of people may find this step as an overly simplistic thing to try, but sometimes the simplest solution to the problem is the correct one.
Make Sure It's Not the Power Cord
Now that you know it's not a bad power outlet causing the problem, the next step is to rule out a bad or malfunctioning power cord. If the power cord isn't working right, it will not charge the battery.
Shut the laptop down and turn it over. You will notice the battery on the bottom of the computer. There is a sliding locking mechanism that you should be able to easily see. Slide it over and, while holding the locking mechanism, remove the battery by lifting it upward. For now, set the battery aside.
Now, flip the laptop back into the proper position and make sure it's plugged into the wall. Without the battery installed, power up the laptop. If the laptop does not power up with the battery removed, chances are it's most likely a bad power cord. Try replacing the power cord with a new one.
Battery Problems
Provided the laptop does power up when plugged in and no battery installed, then the next most likely culprit is the battery itself. The first thing you will want to do is to examine the battery for any obvious damage. Look for corrosion and dents, especially on the battery contacts. If you find any damage to the battery, replace it.
If you see no visible damage, it's possible that the contacts on the battery could need a good cleaning. This is simple enough to do, just dip a cotton swab into some rubbing alcohol and gently clean each of the battery contacts. It wouldn't hurt to clean the battery contacts inside the computer as well, but make sure you have the computer turned off and unplugged from the wall.
Once you're done cleaning, replace the battery and plug the computer into the wall. Leave it alone and give it plenty of time to try to charge up, say about eight hours. When that time period is over, check it out to see if it works and, if not, it's time to replace the battery.
Couldn't It Be Something Else?
The power cord and battery are the most likely problems, but if these troubleshooting tips and replacing the items don't solve it, it's time for a call to technical support. There is likely something internal to the laptop itself that will need to be fixed or repaired.
There are a large number of tiny internal components involved in making sure the laptop charges properly. If any one of these components is not working properly, it's entirely possible that they could cause the laptop to not charge as it should. You'll need a trained technician.
