Tips On How To Deal with The Stress Of Management

by Kourtney Schroer

There is no doubt that as you advance in your career into management, you'll have to assume more responsibility and this can mean dealing with more stress at work. If you are to have success, you need to know how to cope with stress and this can be challenging especially when you are managing people for the first time. It is not only pressure from the staff in your team but also other people that may be in higher management roles who you are answerable to. Readily accepting these types of situations and managing them expertly is one of the hallmarks of a good leader and will set you up for success in the long run.

Learn firstly to determine and apply yourself to the critical tasks that demand attention from you, and back this up with planning that delivers results. A vital element in mastering this is the ability to delegate and allow your staff to do the work while you are freed up to manage them and their work carefully. This involves being seen by your employees as being always prepared to help, but on your terms, with due respect for your other roles. You might need to educate your staff to your thinking on this matter, and call on more experienced and senior team members to provide help where they could.

There'll be occasions when unpopular decisions must be made and this may be due to situations that are outside of your control. Nevertheless, this can mean that you'll have to deal with dissatisfied members of staff which can be tough in the beginning. A sensible way to address these situations is to be open and honest, and to accept from the start that not all decisions will be popular and you can't change that. Particularly with issues of conflict, it is best to reach resolution immediately and move on, forgetting any unpleasant exchanges that may have taken place.

If too large a part of your day is spent working, this may be a sign that you're not scheduling your day effectively, or that you are accepting too many tasks. It is a matter of working smartly and you need to learn to do this as a manager if you are to be successful and minimize any stress. Conscientiously plugging away behind your workspace is also a misconstrued virtue - it is good to get away every so often. If you're feeling stumped, the answer may well be to go over the problem with somebody who is more senior. By doing this you are going to learn from their experience as well as knowing how to deal with similar situations down the road.

Being a manager does call for fortitude, but you can learn to use stress as an opportunity to grow and succeed, by choosing what you focus on and by enlisting the help of other people when needed.
