For Hiring School Support Staff: Things To Know

All the reports from the TV magazine show "Inside Edition" about school teachers and support staff hooking up with the young students, bullying them, and even selling illegal drugs are enough to convince a lot of parents that the best way to keep their children safe from such predators is by schooling the young ones themselves. This is quite unfortunate, because in earlier times, the school was considered the main place of refuge for children when the home was not.

Many parents are wondering what school administrators are doing to effectively protect students from such predators, especially during this time when most young people feel quite alone due to the busy schedule of their parents and the dog-eat-dog dynamics of the school. In the last five years, cases of student suicide have increased all over the world and many of these cases had largely to do with the unfair treatment young students received in school. So many people are speaking up, but not a lot of changes are being witnessed in most schools to make learning institutions completely safe again.

For teachers, naturally, good academic background and strong character are required, but for the school's support staff, what are the qualities that you should look for so the school continues working efficiently and according to the standards that really would help mould young people to become successful members of society?

Parents have listed some of the qualities they would like support staff like school doctors, nurses, librarians, guidance counsellors, et cetera to have, and they are great considerations if you're in charge of hiring support personnel for your school.

1. Caring. This was listed as the top quality parents want for practically every employee of the school. One parent said that the problem these days is that adults in schools no longer care enough to put a halt to bullying or even reach out to a lonely student, and if all the adults displayed enough concern or care for students, the school will remain safe for everybody. 2. Having no criminal record. 3. Friendly. Not too many people know that a friendly janitor, librarian, or school doctor instantly serves as a source of comfort for young people in school. Young kids, especially, take to adults who take the time to talk to them and ask how they're doing outside of the classroom. 4. Authoritative (no matter what their position may be). 5. Having a great sense of accountability. This basically means that they have good standards for the way they behave and live, because they know that as the adults in school, students can learn from them and emulate their actions.
