Accelerated Growth in Smart Cards Shipments

by James Marriot

Around 2.9 billion SIM, banking, ID, & other types of microprocessor smart cards is expected to be shipped by smart card vendors in the year 2007. This indicates that there will be a boom in the number of smart cards in 2007 taking the smart card market high by 20% from 2006.

Security cards, Identity (ID) & documents will develop rapidly thereby occupying the first rank leaving e-passports & health cards that would grow by minimal 50% for second year in a row.

The smart card markets of the Northern & Latin American regions are presently on the threshold of high expansion for abundant applications. Thus, technology of smart cards will play an important part in the daily lives of consumers in these regions.

President and CEO of the Smart Card Alliance, Randy Vanderhoof, said that since 1999, shipments of smart cards to US & Canada have increased more than 122 million. The change being realized is that there is a more even distribution of cards across various sectors including retail, financial, pay TV & government. This change is very positive, as the industry is less dependent on telecom, though that sector continues to be the biggest.

According to the RNCOS report "Global Smart Card Industry - Future Outlook (2007)", the rapid technological development in smart cards is going to further strengthen its market. The envisioned multiple uses of a single smart card will enhance its value, thus, further boosting it sales.
