Galapagos Cruises: Top Ideas

by Terry Philips

If you're a luxury type of traveler, you might not have considered splashing out on a high end tour of Ecuador. But then there are the Galapagos Islands, one of the most coveted vacation destinations on earth. The range of premium cruise yachts, hotels and excursions available at the Galapagos make this a world contender in luxury travel.

Let's make no bones about it, seeing the Galapagos from a cruise is the best way to do it. There are a number of premium cruise options, offering an additional level of service that won't be found on the cheaper services.

Choosing a luxury yacht is definitely one way of getting as much as possible out of your experience here. Being well fed and able to rest in comfort is going to put you in a better mood with plenty of energy for seeing all that the Galapagos have to offer.

The are some key differences to consider when opting for a Galapagos cruise ship of luxury class: chefs on-board are highly trained and will prepare first rate cuisine, guides are qualified and talented, while there is space for additional comforts like social spaces, berths and deck areas with bars and restaurants, with jacuzzis and plunge pools adding even more.

Even within the luxury class of yachts, there are more choices to make. As with luxury hotels, you can choose between the larger types, some of which can carry 100 people on board, and more intimate boutique types that can only hold up to 16. A cruise of any size will generally offer television, air conditioning and private bathrooms among many other amenities. A given is the gourmet meals that are served.

A larger boat will, of course, give you a chance to meet more people. For many, this is part of the fun of traveling. If you are known for getting seasick, consider using a large vessel to ensure that you get the stability you need while on deck. On board activities are usually offered with a great deal of range.

Whilst being one serious consideration, the service and comfort levels on the luxury cruises aren't the only things to consider. One of the most important factors when touring the islands is the quality of your guides. A knowledgeable and personable naturalist is going to enable you to get more out of your experience. If you aren't going to learn about what you're seeing, you could just as well be at a 5-star hotel on land.

The cruises offered can have very different ambiances, aside from that which is inherent in the size of the boat. For example, there are ones that focus more on adventure activities like scuba diving and kayaking. It's not a bad idea to try and get a feel for a yacht's typical type of passenger so you can figure out if it will be a good fit for you.
