Has The Labour Party Lost Its Direction?

by Peter Jones

tIt is crystal clear to anyone that the Labour Party the policital group that my dear late mother canvassed for has become a total disaster.

I suppose they gave the game away when they recently elected Ed Miliband as leader over his brother David. How a party can elect a leader when he does not have a majority of elected MP's voting for him is totally beyond me.

Recently in an article in the Times Miliband has accused the Coalition of propagating "a great deceit designed to damage Labour" over his party's handling of the UK economy.

I find this just so very astounding as his own former Chief Secretary Liam Byrne seemed to find the lack of funds so amusing that he joked about it.

Lets refresh our selves of exactly what was said.

The Former Chief Secretary to the Treasury Liam Byrne left a somewhat "flippant" note to his successor simply advising him "there's no money left".

The letter from the Birmingham and Hodge Hill MP was opened by David Laws.

The letter read "Dear Chief Secretary, I'm afraid there is no money. Kind regards - and good luck! Liam."

When the note of 6th April 2011 the day the election was called - was revealed to the public by Mr David Laws, Mr Liam Byrne explained that he had just simply been using a phrase that all chief secretaries had got used to.

In a televised interview on the BBC's Politics Show Liam Byrne conceded that it made Labour's job of challenging the coalition government's policy on cutting the deficit much more difficult so who does Ed Miliband think he is trying to kid?

I am sure we can all remember when Brown swaggered about at the G20 Summit held in London in April 2009 he appeared to be in a completely different world to the every day employment and economic money fears of the average voter.

As Brown used to proudly say at each budget speech "no more boom or bust" but it is he who takes us into the biggest bust in living memory of most folks. Yet it was Brown who introduced a very light touch of banking supervision in the City.

The Labour government committed this country to two very expensive wars at the same time with out finishing one before starting the second.

The monetary cost of keeping the army in Afghanistan runs at some seven billion sterling every year.

But the true price is that given by our heroic soldiers many of whom have paid the ultimate price by giving their lives and many others who have been injured. This sadly is the real legacy of the Tony Blair/Gordon Brown years.

Remember Gordon Brown ruined our pensions, sold more than 50% of the UK's gold reserves at the lowest price in tweny years and ruined our banks by having no proper supervison. I could never trust them again not even to feed my hamster!
