How To Choose Perfectly Safe Toys For Toddlers

by Donna Marie

Once again, our festive holiday shopping season will soon be here. Do you have toys on your holiday shopping list? If so, then you may be looking for a little shopping advice to help you find that perfect toy. There are millions of toys out there and plenty of new ones go into the stores every year. When choosing toys for toddlers, use the age recommendation on the package to see if it's appropriate for the child on your shopping list. It's important to recognize that age- appropriate toys are established for the development and safety in children of all ages.

With toddlers, age-appropriate toys creates a starting point to appreciate a childs interests and abilities as they mature. When shopping for a toddler, toys that actively engage children physically and mentally are considered important elements to look for in toys. However, every child is a unique individual with their own mature personalities. For this reason, a child should not have toys with small parts if they are still putting objects in their mouths. It's an unpleasant fact, but these small parts can increase a toddler's risk of choking on them.

All toys made in or imported into the United States after 1995 must comply with the USPC standards that closely monitors and regulates toys. Here are some important guidelines to follow:

Toys made of fabric need to be labeled flame resistant or flame retardant. All art and craft materials must be non-toxic, and painted toys must contain lead-free paint. Stuffed animals should be labeled washable. Crayons and paints should say ASTM-4236 which means they were evaluated by the American Society for Testing and Materials.

Always use thoughtful consideration in choosing particular toys that may be too loud for a toddler. The unusual noise of some squeaky rubber toys, and toy sirens may occasionally be a little frightening to a small child. If the child holds the toy directly to the small sensitive ear, it may contribute to hearing loss in the near future. Listen carefully, and pay close attention to the loudness of a toy.

Toddlers have lots of amazing energy and are always anxiously exploring everything in sight. Every so often, their curiosity is so overwhelming that they feel the need to touch and investigate everything they see. At times their curiousity far outweighs their judgement for predicting foreseeing dangers. And no one seems to know this better than the parents. Safety should at all times be the top priority, and most parents would be happy to offer some insight as to what toys their toddler would like. Occasionally a little toy and game advice can truly make a difference.

Choosing a toy that puts a smile on a childs face is without a doubt so exciting. It's also important to always keep safety in mind during your holiday shopping days. If you're indecisive about whether a child is too young for the toy even though the age recommendation on the toy indicates otherwise, take the safe side and trust your instincts. Enjoy your holidays, and have fun watching those energenic little toddlers shake and tear open their Christmas presents. Watch those wide-eyed little faces burst with joy. Cheers to you, in hopes of finding that perfect toy.
