How To Create Adult Spaces In Your Home

by Stewart Wrighter

While family time is important and parents should make time to focus on children without distractions, it is equally important that parents have time to focus on one another. It is easy to get caught up in everyday life with home maintenance, jobs and kids, but in order to maintain a healthy relationship; parents must have time for themselves. There is a tendency to talk only about the logistical aspects of a relationship like where the kids need to be when, when the car needs to be maintained and how many people will be coming for holiday dinners. However, to keep a relationship healthy and vibrant, time must be taken for just enjoying the company of one another. Remember how important it was to communicate at the beginning of the relationship and do your best to continue having those moments on an ongoing basis. There are plenty of ways you can create space to be shared for just the parents in a home. Consider creating a home fitness equipment room where adults can go to work out and have fun. A home exercise equipment room can be simple and have just one or two machines, gym flooring and some open space. Adults can get in a good workout and enjoy each other's company without interference from kids.

One of the most important spaces parents can keep off-limits from kids is the bedroom. You can explain to your kids that this is your personal space and offer them space of their own, like in their own bedrooms. While the private things in the bedroom will include romance, it should also be a place where you and your spouse can communicate openly and be free from interruption. All of these things are part of having a healthy, long-term relationship with your spouse.

Another way to create a relaxing kid-free space in which to connect is to build a library or reading room. Chances are, if nothing in the room interests your child, they will not have a burning desire to spend time in the space. Build some shelves on the wall, fill the room with books, reading materials and things you love, and explain to the family that it is an adults-only space. You and your spouse can take time in the evening or on the weekends to just relax, read the paper or enjoy a quiet conversation without the interference of children.

Another option is to create a bathroom spa. This helps you have a stress-free spot in your home you can enjoy on your own, but if you bathtub is big enough; there is no reason why you and your spouse cannot enjoy a bubble bath together. Bathrooms are typically private place, so it should not be that hard to turn your space into something that feels like a personal sanctuary. You will be amazed at how much a relaxing bubble bath does for your senses at the end of a long day.

Finally, just design a sitting room in your home with no television. This room can be used for visiting with guests or just chatting with your spouse. Kids will be bored by the room, so there is little threat of having them take it over and making it into a kid-space.
