Telepresence applications come in different forms, the most basic being the telephone. Although users of a telephone do not feel as if they are located in the other party's location, the phone does break down location barriers and allows them to communicate in an effective manner.

Telepresence application technological advancements have added video to applications, which is how video conferencing was formed. Most forms of video conferencing allow a person to view the other communicating party on a large screen.

Telepresence applications and systems that are created in a sophisticated manner arouse all senses of the users using the applications; even including smell and taste senses. Much research and development is implemented into these types of telepresence applications, and these applications usually require the users to wear a visor and other gear, as these tools help the users feel as if they are literally in a distant location.
