So many anglers spent thousands on their rod pods, alarms, rods, reels, bivvies, bedchairs, barrows, bait boats and other gear, thinking it will make them catch most fish, and then incredibly, expect miracles in spending the very least amount on bait possible; this is unbelievable, but true! Re-focusing on bait will significantly transform your catches fast; so why not make this your best year ever!

The biggest leveler in carp fishing is understanding the fish internally. By this I mean within the context of controlling their feeding modes of behaviours, most especially within the context of genuinely optimised bait that actually reflects those kinds of pathways and hidden aspects of bait that cannot be smelled tasted or touched but are vital in changing how fish actually feel!

Bait is a feeling journey of discovery, not merely one of sensory visuals, or of texture or binding or food. Bait is literally how much you can control how fish actually feel, in very specific ways, in your unique favour. This is worlds apart from the narrow common definition of so-called food baits where trying to meet estimated daily requirements of nutrients of carp are the mainstay of so many anglers, yet fails to address the unique sensitivities and palatabilities of each individual fish, and where boiled heated baits really are the least active of bait possibilities, especially in dense cold water conditions, where bait reactivity teamed with optimised and maximised bait potency, and not balanced nutrition really scores most!

Unfortunately for bait companies, the substances that make baits most potent are costing more and more. This means that there must be a compromise between bait form and function and cost to the customer. With homemade baits this is no barrier because you can just focus upon bait potency per individual bait, not on a price per kilogram (Volume sales being bait companies focus of course.) This is where you as a homemade bait maker can make the most potent baits possible, which means you can use the very least amount of bait possible to achieve outstanding success, at any time of year!

The principle I use is to design baits for winter and I do mean design and test countless variations and formats of baits that catch fish in the very worst of winter conditions and the very hottest and most de-oxygenated of summer conditions. Doing this means your baits by definition absolutely must alter the internal and external conditions of the fish and means you are most in control of your fish behaviours and feeding, and how you achieve this is totally your unique choice and own personal journey of discovery and self-development of growing awareness and experiences. There are no mistakes in bait, only feedback, vital to continuing evolution of learning, understanding of fish and substances and their appreciation, on ultimately an intuitive level, not just on the superficial logical and theoretical levels!

I hooked the world record carp back in 2006, the biggest leather carp in the UK, and an awesome number of big carp over 40 plus some fifties going way back, on homemade baits against leading brand readymade baits. The catches my one to one bait tuition course clients have had over the past 6 years is all the proof anyone requires; several have had the best catch in the history of their lake, I mean straight afterwards. The principles, the most potent components make all the difference; but it’s in the refined details that the real magic happens; and that’s taken 10 years of full-time work on refining homemade baits to defeat readymades, to achieve. Bait is literally the unseen things; the impacts and effects of substances which alter fish internally; which change their behaviours and mood in the actual moment, in real time, no pre-baiting required for big fish success! Unfortunately for you there is no simple or dummy’s way to make baits (that are genuinely optimised!) Trying to make baits while while not aiming to genuinely optimising them is a certain fast-track to repeated failure instead of repeated exceptional big fish catches fast!

If want a very simple bait perhaps you’d begin at the 10 year old level, like I did. Be open-minded as possible; be prepared to experiment and test baits using comparative baits, always; bait testing is the secret key to constantly improving baits and catches and always keeping ahead of bait-induced fish feeding caution.

Do not look for a miracle recipe. The fact is that all baits will blow once enough fish are hooked in a lake. So it’s actually best to keep on experimenting and making new and uniquely different versions of baits all the time, keeping initially testing these new versions against your existing best winning baits, so you progress very methodically indeed. Forget thirties; always test new bait versions on easy fish; the best of these will indeed catch forties and fifties, even upon first ever use, providing you have refined your baits on easy fish. This way, all the baits you ever make can all be super-winners as they are based upon the best of the very best you have already refined.

Bait is a personal development journey. It this was not so, then anglers around the world would be having lake record catches everywhere on a semolina and soya flour egg flavour and sweetener bait again and again. But having just told you how to make a bait, sure it might catch some fish, somewhere, but it’s about the worst example of a beginner bait possible for big wary carp in today’s competitive context! You deserve better; in fact you deserve the very best!

But bait is about understanding and appreciating, personally, a bit like feeling a sugar and caffeine rush from the impact of coke, or the addictive peptide hit of milk in a milky coffee, or feeling the impact of alcohol affecting your brain, mood and behaviours and physical state, instead of merely knowing a bit about it, like its smell, or taste… Bait is about how things make you feel; how they change you inside.

Understand these things and you can apply them precisely, in exact component parts, to control your fishes’ behaviours in your unique favour and catch amazing catches faster than most people on the bank fishing readymade boilies can possibly imagine.

Making paste baits is the simplest way to begin getting a feel for physically making baits, merely testing baits on easy fish using lots of versions against each other and using the most successful of these as the basis of your next generation of baits to test on easy fish, recording all the components and levels in detail; without knowing components how are you going to be able to make your very best baits again?....

As you can see, knowing the percent of each component is rather central to success and constant bait refining and to further developing yourself, your baits and your catches, for life... It's a journey. I began mine in homemade bait 39 years ago and you're just starting.

But you've got to start somewhere, and work and persevere at it; studying carp; how they function internally, and how and why they behave and move and do precisely what they do naturally, with no presence of baits, just detecting natural foods algae zooplankton, fallen berries, worms, bloodworm, weed, snails, mussels, aquatic insect larvae, denser mineral patches, more oxygenated water and so on; all this is bait; it's getting the bigger picture!

Genuinely optimised carp bait literally is a mirror of fish physiology; literally their energy system, an energy short-cut. It is components required for life; in the processes that keep carp alive and able to survive energy-efficiently. So every pathway, every substance can be applied, for very specific reasons. So you want to know how to make a bait?

Attempting to explain how to make a bait without components is like trying to explain how to make a cake having been given ingredients, but not knowing how much of each matters to make a cake palatable, or even rise, or even form a cake-like structure. The icing on a cake is most often glucose powder and water. But how much glucose and how much water? (Notice that glucose is the end product of digestion and essential for life; it is very useful in bait because this is precisely what bait is; internal short-cuts for the fish to exploit, instead of having to break down whole proteins and carbohydrates for instance!

It's simple; research substances carp are most sensitive to in terms of their sensory systems, and overload your paste baits using them as the core of your bait; so instead of using binders and eggs think about not using eggs which seal baits up far too much; use substances instead which dramatically stimulate carp; a very simple starter bait can be whey protein, corn steep liquor powder, in equal amounts, with a dash of fructose sugar and sea salt, and using Marmite and condensed milk in equal parts as liquid.

A betaine source is a must; use betaine in all your baits in at least 5 percent, or 50 grams per kilogram of your bait.

If you can't handle percentages then just mix 5 desert spoons whey protein concentrate (WP100) with 5 desert spoons of corn steep liquor powder and 1 desert spoon of pure betaine powder.

Simply mix Marmite and condensed mix in equal amounts and if you want, add a flavour, try butyric acid, at a teaspoon of this with 5 desert spoons of condensed milk Marmite mixture.

A starter liquid for bait I recommend, is CC Moore Feedstim XP. This is extremely soluble and salty and an energy short-cut, being predigested vegetable protein with a human supplement plus salts (all genuinely optimised bait is merely extremely potent liquid made temporarily into solid form; it must become solution in order to work at its peak!)
