Quickbooks vs. Quickbooks Online: Which is Better? It's Not What You Think

by Pat Lindle

Not all programs are created equally. You have to understand that some of an applications may not translate from home edition to an online counterpart. Thus is the case with Quickbooks.

The problem with the having an online application is that you are going to find some differences. They are designed to offer different components and a lot of people forget this when they buy a well-known program's online alternate. What we have found with regards to QuickBooks and QuickBooks Online is that you will loose, not only a few applications in the online version, but also some of the speed and functionality of the program. If it is used as a "checkbook" these are really not a big issue. For small business, it is a major problem.

The biggest drawback of the online version is the lost of speed. The online version adds time to your day because reports that the home edition spits out very quickly can take much longer online. The bandwidth and other factors affect the speed with which your application performs. The lack of keyboard shortcuts also will add to the amount of time that it takes to actually enter the data.

Though the speed issue will not be a problem for everyone, the fact that you can only pull up one report at a time can get frustrating. The home edition allows for multiple tabs so you can move back and forth between reports. The main reasons for getting the online version is probably the access it allows for the staff that is in different locations. This can be solved by adding a program that allows remote access and still give you all the forms and tools of your home edition.

Below is list of the major differences in the two programs, the choice is yours.

QuickBooks online: Pros 1. WIFI access from any location. You can also connect with several different departments from anywhere you are. 2. You can have 4 users on the account. 3. The work is backed up daily, so you never risk losing important data 4. Updates come in automatically and you get access to Support at no extra cost.

QuickBooks online: Cons 1. You do not have any forms that handle inventory or purchase orders so as a retail, manufacturing or distribution tool it is not good. 2. You will not have access to a currency calculator. If you are doing business that spans the globe this function is a must. 3. Not being able to pull up multiple windows is a serious drawback 4. NO company overview or snapshot

There may be more but for know these are the problems that will cost the most difficulty for any business.
