What Makes For A World Beating Logo?
A logo is an identifiable insignia, name or trademark associated with a company. The whole purpose of which is to create an instantly recognisable image in the mind of their customers. Think about some of the most well known logos that you know, for instance the 'swoosh' tick is associated with Nike, the polo player with Ralph Lauren and that Flying Lady with Rolls Royce. These logos are synonymous with those companies and are instantly recognisable. A well designed logo attracts attention but it does demand a good deal of careful thought so that you can create something that is synonymous with your business.
When you start thinking about a logo for your business, there are a few things you should take into account. Here are a few pointers to help you:
Think about what your business does, what its values are, what sort of clients you have and what image you wish to portray. Look at what message you would like to convey through your logo and what you can communicate through it. If your logo is to be used in the promotion of a specific product, it needs to be designed to appeal to the target audience.
Try to make the design of your logo eye catching. If you have text in the logo, make sure you use a font that is easily read. Careful use of colour can make your logo unique and this is important so as not to cause confusion with other brands.
A well designed logo should make an impression on customers, it should be memorable and something that they will associate with your business. With logos, the saying that 'less is more' is very applicable and often the simplest designs are the most memorable. Think back to the Nike swoosh, you just need to see the symbol and you instantly think about sportswear from that company. The symbol is lodged in the subconscious so that when it is seen, Nike is what comes to mind.
Logo design should be flexible to allow it to work in different situations. For instance, the logo should be able to be clearly seen on websites, promotional material and things like wrappers. This is where you should consider the logo size and the colours used. Remember that your logo will not only be seen today but must be relevant for the future as well. A clever designer will be able to create a timeless classic.
Keep it simple. Most people like simple logos because they are easy to remember. A fussy or overcrowded logo is off putting and can be confusing for people to understand. Choose a font that is plain and easy to read. You might think that a fancy font looks great but it may be difficult for those with less than perfect eyesight to read and the font may also look old fashioned after a few years. Colours should be chosen carefully, it is always a good idea to create the logo in black and white first. If it does not look good in black and white, it will probably not look good in colour. If you have corporate colours already, see how those can be incorporated.
When designing your company logo, make sure it is unique and has the ability to stand out. Do not fall into the trap of creating something similar to a well known logo as this is known to create confusion and you could end up losing sales. Don't forget that your company is unique, so try to be extraordinary when designing your logo.
