How To Become A Nurse Entrepreneur

by LeaRae Keyes, BSN, RN, PHN, CCM

Are you a nurse who is tired of being controlled by your job? Are you wanting to become your own boss, but don't know how? You are not alone. There are many nurses just like you.

If this sounds like you it is probably time for you to consider becoming a nurse entrepreneur. Combine your nursing skills and experience with some basic business skills and start your own business.

There are so many options for becoming a nurse entrepreneur. So your first step will be to determine the ones that interest you the most. Some nurse entrepreneur opportunities include: case manager, legal nurse consultant, nurse life care planner, wellness coach, and wound care nurse. There are even more opportunities that you can discover by doing a Google search on "Nurse Entrepreneur".

Your next step is to determine if there is a group of eager buyers waiting for the product or service you want to create. Can you find where they gather? You will have to work much harder and probably be less successful if you have to find your customers one at a time. You want to be able to find them in a group and present yourself and your product or service to the group.

Do what you need to do to thoroughly understand the business you want to start. Hire a mentor or business coach to help you to be successful. Many nurses say they don't want to spend any money of other people's services until they are making money. This is like saying you don't want to buy dishes for your restaurant until you are making money.

Determine how you will make your business stand out from your competitors. What is going to make people buy from you and not your competitor? One bit of advice here: Don't make it about price. If you try to sell your product or service based on it being the cheapest on the market you will almost surely fail.

Plan how you will get the word out. "If you build it, they will come!" is a widespread myth. When you are thinking about creating your business you need to also be thinking about how you are going to reach your target audience. If no one knows what you have to offer they cannot buy from you. If they don't know what makes you different from your competitors they won't be interested enough to buy from you.

Transitioning from an employee to a nurse entrepreneur can be exciting and challenging! It will have ups and downs. However, if you think you are ready to take this leap start with a plan. Review the information above and then begin to pull your plan together.

Becoming a nurse entrepreneur isn't easy. However, if you persevere you will enjoy amazing benefits such as the sense of accomplishment of having set and achieved a huge goal, having a passive income that brings you an income even when you aren't working, or being able to help people in a way you always dreamed about but were too encumbered by a system to deliver.
