There is absolutely no scope for doubting the advisability of hiring a rental car, while on a trip to a new city. However, availing of professional car rental services does not rule out the possibilities of on-road and/or off-road complications, which might crop up. You should stay aware of the following factors that can go wrong when you take a car on hire, and make adequate arrangements to mitigate them as much as possible:

a. Exorbitant prices – Professional car rental companies generally offer vehicles at competitive rates. However, if you postpone the task of booking the vehicle of your choice till too long – the charges are likely to escalate. It is always advisable to get the booking done at least 2/3 weeks in advance.

b. Faulty mechanical condition – The onus is on you to choose a car rental agency that inspects the condition of their cars, before handing them over for hire. If you are negligent about this factor, the chances of on-road vehicular breakdowns would increase manifold. Get the electrical components, engine, glasses, and all the other auto accessories inspected, before you take charge of it.

c. Getting a ‘too small’ or ‘too large’ car – Companies that provide car hire services typically have several alternative varieties of car models. You need to browse through their websites, and specify the model/type of car that would be the most suitable for you. Different cars have varying rental rates on them – and it makes no sense in paying more than what you have to.

d. Fuel problems – Never take a rental car, the fuel tank of which is not full. You will also need to refill the tank, before taking it back to the office of the car rental agency. Discrepancies regarding the fuel-levels can result in additional charges and penalties.

e. On-road damages – While personal safety is, of course, the primary concern in case of any car accidents, you also need to ensure that the vehicle you have taken is completely insured. That, in turn, would protect you from having to spend money on repairs. You will also be able to ask for a replacement vehicle immediately.

f. Non-familiarity with the local traffic rules – If you are not aware of the traffic rules and regulations of the city you have arrived at, driving the rental car yourself would be risky. You might even feel lost – simply because you do not have in-depth knowledge of the different roads and sections of the city. Ask for chauffeur driven car rental services from a reliable local agency – and bring all such worries to a smooth end!

g. Tire blowouts – Easily one of the most common (yet overlooked) problems that you can face, while traveling in a car. Look for car rental companies that include checking the tire condition and air-pressure level, in their overall vehicle inspection routines. Ask the representatives of the company to provide spare tires as well.

h. Confusions about the payment norms – Read through the website/contract document of the car rental agency you have chosen, to find out the basis on which rental rates are calculated. Get all ambiguities clarified by the representatives of the company. Stay away from agencies that have hidden charges.

Request the chauffeur to drive the car with due care, so that chances of accidents remain minimal. Make sure that your chosen car rental agency has the necessary license and registration documents. Things can still go awry even after you choose to opt for car rental services – you should not be too naïve about this fact!
